Bhojpuri to Punjabi: familiar-looking forms still need Gurmukhi grammar

Gurmukhi output is translation rather than transliteration

The Punjabi target discussed here uses Gurmukhi. Bhojpuri and Punjabi can share recognizable Indo-Aryan vocabulary and postpositional constructions, but changing Devanagari letters into Gurmukhi does not establish Punjabi grammar. Lohar’s Bara-Parsa Bhojpuri description supplies the source relationships; the chosen Punjabi words must then take their own forms.

This distinction is especially visible in pronunciation. Gill and Gleason’s reference grammar treats Punjabi tone as contrastive, with pitch contour and duration participating in lexical distinctions. A Bhojpuri word that resembles a Punjabi word does not establish the latter’s tonal realization. The meaning and pronunciation of the target item belong to Punjabi, even when its spelling or historical origin feels familiar.

An -e form need not identify several people

Punjabi University gives ਮੁੰਡਾ, muṇḍā, boy, and ਮੁੰਡੇ, muṇḍe, boys, but also identifies ਮੁੰਡੇ as the singular oblique form. Thus the same written target form can participate in a plural phrase or in a singular phrase before a relationship marker. A Bhojpuri plural interpretation should not be inferred from that ending in isolation.

Lohar describes Bhojpuri case markers as postpositional, with attached forms in pronouns. Punjabi likewise uses postpositions, but the noun may need an oblique form before them. The Punjabi phrase must preserve both the source participant’s number and its relationship. Selecting a familiar dictionary noun and merely appending the translated Bhojpuri postposition can leave its required inflection unfinished.

A shared gender system still leaves lexical choices to Punjabi

Bara-Parsa Bhojpuri distinguishes masculine and feminine; Lohar notes reduced gender marking in eastern varieties. Punjabi nouns also have grammatical gender, but the source classification does not guarantee the gender of the target headword. Punjabi University explicitly describes inanimate noun gender as grammatical and warns that ending patterns have exceptions.

Its examples include masculine ਆਦਮੀ, ādmī, man, despite the -ī ending that might otherwise suggest a feminine pattern. The source noun’s ending and the target noun’s ending are therefore clues rather than a conversion rule. A Bhojpuri descriptive phrase must be rebuilt with the Punjabi headword’s actual agreement pattern, particularly where the source variety has supplied less overt gender information.

A prohibition uses a different target pattern from an ordinary denial

Bhojpuri negative meaning can be built into a special copular form such as nʌikʰe in Lohar’s account. Punjabi’s reference grammar distinguishes ordinary negative verbal patterns from negative imperatives. The source must be identified as a statement or a command before choosing a Punjabi negator.

The grammar contrasts ਓਥੇ ਜਾਹ, go there, with ਓਥੇ ਨਾ ਜਾਹ, do not go there. A Bhojpuri prohibition should retain that force rather than becoming a report that somebody is not going. Conversely, a negative statement does not become an order simply because it contains a familiar motion verb. Bhojpuri auxiliaries also need interpretation: जा jā can mark a passive construction, so a source passive should not generate a Punjabi travel instruction merely from the isolated lexical resemblance.
