Belarusian to Basque: translate participants before translating case names

An accusative does not need a Basque accusative

Belarusian and Basque both use endings to show relationships, but their case systems organize a clause differently. Belarusian commonly distinguishes a nominative subject from an accusative direct object. Basque instead uses an absolutive pattern for many intransitive subjects and transitive objects, alongside an ergative marker for the subject of a transitive construction. Searching for a Basque ending with the same label as the Belarusian one is therefore the wrong task.

Compare the Basque form txakurra in Txakurra hemen dago, the dog is here, with txakurrak when that dog is the actor in an appropriate ergative construction. The animal has not become plural merely because a visible k appears. The full construction determines how the ending should be read.

Follow the dog, shepherd, and transferred item

The university grammar gives Artzainari zaunka egin dio txakurrak: the dog has barked at the shepherd. The shepherd has dative marking; the dog has ergative marking. A reader cannot assign actorhood simply to the first noun. This is a useful warning when a Belarusian original puts an object or recipient first for emphasis: preserve that participant’s role, not a guessed subject based on position.

Belarusian accusative marking itself also has several jobs. It can identify a direct object, appear after a directional preposition, or express a duration without a preposition. Those uses should not collapse into one Basque object construction. In an account of moving an item onto a table, distinguish the item moved from the destination and any time expression before selecting Basque forms.

Basque commonly places relationship marking at the right edge of a noun phrase. Belarusian can distribute agreement across the noun and its modifiers. Consequently, a description may need one phrase-final Basque marker where the source displays several matching endings. The absence of a repeated ending on every translated word is not missing information.

The auxiliary needs more than the source past ending

Belarusian past forms distinguish gender and number, not person by themselves. Чытаў, a masculine singular past reading form, still needs a pronoun or discourse context to establish whether I, you, or another man is the reader. Basque auxiliary choices can additionally reflect more than one participant, including an affected item and a dative participant where the construction requires it.

A transfer described in Belarusian should therefore be checked for giver, transferred item, and recipient. Changing one recipient from a single person to several people can affect the Basque auxiliary even if the giver stays the same. Copying a previously translated auxiliary because the Belarusian past ending has not changed can lose that distinction.

For a practical review, trace each Belarusian participant into the Basque clause, then read its phrase ending together with the auxiliary. This catches a more consequential error than unusual word order: a fluent-looking sentence in which the correct nouns describe the wrong relationship.
