Basque to Yoruba: a future plan, a condition or a repeated habit?

Basque -ko does not always promise a future event

A Basque verb ending associated with a future event can also occur in a conditional. Translating that ending directly into a Yoruba future expression can turn a hypothetical consequence into an announcement. Read the auxiliary as well as the main verb: the distinction changes whether somebody actually expects to do something or is describing what would happen under a condition.

Laka contrasts a writer who will write two novels with a conditional consequence using izango zen, would be. Both use the aspectual formation she calls unrealized. Her analysis explains that combining it with a present auxiliary yields a future reading, while past or modal combinations can yield conditional readings. The shared ending therefore does not supply enough information to choose the Yoruba construction.

Yoruba future expression has more than one visible shape

The University of Texas course introduces máa with both regular and emphatic pronouns in its future lesson. It separately lists contracted alternatives such as Mà á for first person. A Basque user should not interpret the contracted form as missing its future meaning merely because it lacks a separately written máa. The target can express the same person and future orientation through a different surface shape.

The lesson gives negative future patterns using kò nì í rather than teaching simple retention of affirmative máa with one added negative word. For a Basque cancellation or refusal concerning a planned action, preserving negation means selecting the appropriate target pattern. The affirmative structure cannot be treated as a fixed phrase with a universally detachable future word. These are the course’s illustrated constructions, not an exhaustive account of Yoruba modality.

Recurring activity must stay distinct from a single plan

In another chapter, the same course uses máa together with its habitual/progressive marker in descriptions of customary activities. Its text about earlier practices provides recurring activities rather than a schedule for one future visit. The additional marker and the temporal setting matter: recognizing máa alone is not sufficient to interpret the whole expression as a one-time future plan.

For Basque into Yoruba, distinguish an arrangement for next week from an activity someone regularly performs. The Basque message may identify a date, a repeated occasion or an unreal condition; each supplies a different frame for interpreting the predicate. A target expression that happens to contain the same short word as another construction does not erase those differences.

Conditional plans depend on what comes before the consequence

The course’s next-week dialogue includes planned activities linked to arriving somewhere and completing earlier work. The sequence is useful because the planned actions are not isolated future labels: their timing depends on previous events. A Basque account of what someone will do after arriving should retain that dependency rather than present every action as immediately underway.

Laka’s conditional examples likewise separate a proposed circumstance from its consequence. If an invitation says someone would leave if another person came, neither event should become an unconditional Yoruba prediction. Preserve the relationship between the clauses before shortening the message. This keeps the difference between an actual arrangement, a recurring practice and a possibility that depends on a condition.
