Basque to Mexican Spanish: asking where something is differs from asking how it is

A location answer may leave the real question unanswered

A Basque message about a parcel can ask where it is or ask about its condition after transport. Both may concern the same parcel, but they require different answers. In Mexican Spanish, an expression involving encontrarse can describe location or condition, so recognising that verb alone does not establish what information the writer requested.

Rudolf de Rijk’s discussion of Basque adverbial expressions identifies non as where and nola as how. These provide different starting points for interpreting a question. The rest of the sentence still matters: how can concern manner, while a particular conversation may ask about a condition. Do not interpret every nola question as a request for an address.

The Diccionario del español de México documents encontrarse both for being in a place and for being in a particular situation. Its contrasting examples concern a geographical location and a person doing better. The dictionary therefore supports checking the complement and context rather than assigning the verb a single location meaning.

A delivery enquiry needs the right kind of detail

Imagine a Basque buyer discussing a ceramic bowl delivered to a Mexican workshop. One message asks where the parcel has been stored; another asks whether the bowl survived intact. These are original customer-service situations. A shelf number answers the first question, while a description of cracks or safe arrival answers the second.

If the source asks about condition, preserve any actual concern about damage or packaging. Do not turn it into a search request merely because the parcel has recently moved. Conversely, if the buyer needs a collection location, a reassuring statement that the bowl is fine will not tell the courier where to go.

A combined reply can supply both facts when the source does: the parcel is in storage and the bowl is undamaged, for example. Keep the location attached to the parcel and the condition attached to the item being assessed. Packaging and contents may have different conditions, so an intact box does not establish that everything inside is intact.

Do not infer discovery from every encontrar form

The Mexican dictionary also records finding an object that somebody seeks, encountering a person and forming an impression of something. These senses make it risky to read every appearance of encontrar or encontrarse as an announcement that a lost parcel has been found. The sentence must actually report that event.

For an enquiry about a person, distinguish whereabouts from wellbeing as carefully as parcel location from condition. A reply naming the workshop does not answer whether the person is feeling better. A reply describing improvement does not supply an address. These are possible communication needs, not interchangeable meanings imposed on the Basque question word.

Before forwarding the delivery exchange, identify what answer would satisfy the original question: a place, a condition, a method or a report of finding something. Then check the Mexican Spanish wording against that need. This preserves the buyer’s purpose and prevents a fluent but differently directed question from sending staff to search when they should inspect, or inspect when they should provide directions.
