Basque to Slovak: elkar and bere burua distinguish mutual action from action toward oneself

Two people can love each other without loving themselves

Anek eta Jonek elkar maite dute describes Ane and Jon loving each other in Laka’s Basque grammar. Elkar expresses a reciprocal relationship between the participants. Laka also records bata bestea as a second Basque expression for reciprocity, built from one and other. It should not become a Slovak statement that each person loves themselves independently, even though the target language uses reflexive-looking forms in some reciprocal constructions.

Basque bere burua belongs to a different pattern. Laka illustrates Miren knowing how to take care of herself. Here the action is directed back toward Miren, rather than exchanged between Miren and a second person. The distinction is between participant relationships, not merely between two different ways of writing the same pronoun.

Slovak reflexive forms can support reciprocal readings

Morfológia slovenského jazyka explains that reflexive variants can express either reflexive or reciprocal meaning, with context often determining the interpretation. It discusses milovať sa among reciprocal constructions and pomáhať si for mutual helping. These are documented target patterns, not a guarantee that an isolated sa or si always means each other.

The grammar notes that a reciprocal reading can be clarified by expressions such as vzájomne or jeden druhého. This provides a useful target resource when the Basque source makes mutuality explicit through elkar but an unqualified Slovak expression could leave the intended relationship unclear.

For the Ane-and-Jon example, retain both directions of the relationship: Ane’s attitude toward Jon and Jon’s toward Ane. A sentence about Ane alone, Jon alone, or two separate self-directed attitudes would change what the source says. The target should make the mutual interpretation available without inventing a third participant.

A plural antecedent does not turn every action into reciprocity

Laka points out that the Basque reciprocal requires a plural antecedent even though elkar itself does not trigger plural-object agreement. Thus the verb’s visible number pattern cannot be read as a simple count of reciprocal targets. The participants’ relationship must be recovered from the pronoun and the whole clause.

Likewise, a message saying that several people each take care of themselves differs from one saying that they take care of one another. The first assigns self-directed care separately; the second establishes interaction. If the Slovak construction can support more than one interpretation, preserve the Basque distinction through sufficiently explicit wording rather than relying on plurality alone.

For Basque into Slovak, identify whether the source action returns to the same participant or passes between participants. Use the target reflexive or reciprocal construction that communicates that relationship, adding a clarifying reciprocal expression where needed. This preserves the difference between personal self-care and mutual involvement without treating every target sa or si as an automatic equivalent of either Basque form.
