Basque to Sindhi: the same nik does not require the same target pronoun in every tense

Basque marks a transitive first-person actor independently of this tense contrast

Nik liburuak irakurri ditut and nik liburuak irakurri nituen both identify the speaker as the reader of books in Laka’s agreement examples. The auxiliary construction changes, but the independent pronoun nik remains the same. A Sindhi translation must determine the temporal construction before choosing its pronoun pattern rather than assigning one target form permanently to nik.

The Basque ending on nik does not mean that the speaker is male, nor does it identify the number or gender of the books. It marks the speaker’s case relationship in the clause. Keeping that function distinct from tense and object properties is essential because Sindhi organizes some corresponding choices differently.

Sindhi transitive past examples change the first-person form

The Sindhi Language Authority contrasts مان خط لکان ٿو with مون خط لکيو for writing a letter and having written a letter. Its explanation identifies the first-person change from مان to مون with the transitive past pattern. These are documented writing examples, not translations of the Basque book-reading pair.

This contrast shows why a translator should not preserve a target pronoun merely because Basque repeats nik. The person can remain the same speaker while the required Sindhi form changes with the construction. Conversely, two different target forms do not imply that the source suddenly switches narrators.

In a reading or writing update, first establish whether the speaker describes a habitual activity, a completed event or a compound construction with its own temporal interpretation. A form chosen for a general description of what the person writes cannot simply be carried unchanged into an account of what that person wrote yesterday.

Object agreement is a separate target decision

The Authority’s transitive-past lesson also distinguishes verb forms according to the object’s gender and number, using letter-writing and food examples. Basque has object-number agreement in the illustrated auxiliaries, but no corresponding nominal masculine-feminine system. The target noun’s gender must therefore be established from Sindhi, not inferred from the Basque first-person pronoun.

The writing example is especially useful because changing the kind of written item can affect Sindhi agreement while leaving the writer unchanged. The source may distinguish a letter from a note through vocabulary; the translation should preserve that item choice and follow the target noun’s properties. A new verb ending need not indicate a new author. One writer can produce one letter or several notes.

For Basque into Sindhi, separate the reader or writer, the temporal construction and the item affected. Recover those facts from the whole clause before selecting the target pronoun and verb agreement. This prevents nik from becoming a fixed word-for-word substitution and keeps changes associated with tense or object gender from being mistaken for changes in who performed the action.
