Basque to Russian: self-reference and ownership are different relationships

A Basque body-part expression can refer to the whole person

Laka describes Basque reflexive expressions as noun phrases built around buru, head, with a possessive component. Her neure burua corresponds to myself, while bere burua can correspond to himself or herself. In an ordinary reflexive construction, this is not necessarily a statement about somebody’s physical head as an independently owned object. A Russian translation must recover the self-reference before selecting a noun or possessive expression.

The same grammar distinguishes elkar, each other, from these reflexive forms. Its example involving Ane and Jon loving each other expresses a reciprocal relationship between two people, rather than each person acting on themself. For Basque-to-Russian translation, keep the affected participant distinct from the owner of a possession, and keep reciprocal action distinct from individual self-directed action. The source’s internal possessive-looking material does not by itself establish which Russian possessive word should appear in the result.

Russian own expressions do not all have the same distribution

Grashchenkova and Grashchenkov’s primary study distinguishes the possessive reflexive svoj, the personal possessive ego and the adjective sobstvennyj. Their example moj sobstvennyj dom means my own house. Here ownership concerns a house; it is not the same relationship as the whole-person reflexive expressed by Basque neure burua. First identify what is possessed and who possesses it before choosing a Russian own construction.

The researchers also show that the potential interpretation of svoj depends on the clause structure. In their finite embedded-clause example, the relevant owner is constrained differently from the owner in an infinitival example involving a professor and an assistant. A Basque source with several people and an embedded action therefore requires more than choosing a Russian word glossed as own. Track which person owns the item inside the relevant clause. The paper’s analysis further distinguishes the more complex svoj sobstvennyj expression from simple svoj, so adding an emphatic-looking adjective can affect interpretation rather than merely strengthen the same phrase.

A request introduces another ownership-and-address interaction

The primary study Reflexives and politeness examines Russian possessives in imperative sentences using the spoken Russian National Corpus. It distinguishes informal singular ty address from formal singular Vy address. The authors find a strong preference for reflexive possession in their informal singular contexts, while formal contexts permit a different distribution. These are corpus findings about specified imperative environments, not a universal rule replacing every personal possessive in Russian.

For a Basque request involving somebody’s document or belongings, identify whether the owner is the addressee and what relationship the source intends. The Russian choice can interact with how that person is addressed and with the particular request. Do not automatically reinterpret a non-reflexive possessive in a formal target request as referring to a stranger; the study documents subject-coreferential uses in that environment. At the same time, do not turn an ordinary Basque ownership statement into emphatic own wording. Preserve the source distinction among acting on oneself, acting on each other and acting on an owned item, then assess the Russian clause and address construction.
