Basque to Romanian: identifying the object before interpreting pe and a short pronoun

A Basque unmarked form can belong to different roles

In Laka’s Basque case examples, otsoa etorri da describes the wolf arriving, while ehiztariak otsoa harrapatu du describes the hunter catching the wolf. The absolutive wolf expression participates in both sentences, but it is not the actor of the catching event. For Romanian, determine the event roles before selecting a subject or direct-object construction. A noun’s recognisable form is not enough to establish that it performs the action.

The difference becomes especially consequential when both participants are people. A report that somebody arrived and a report that somebody was encountered can both contain a Basque absolutive person, while requiring different relationships in Romanian. Retain the actor, affected participant and event separately during source reading. The target may mark a direct object in ways that have no visible counterpart on the Basque absolutive noun. That extra target material should be interpreted as grammar, rather than automatically treated as a new person or a new action.

Romanian pe is not a general equivalent of a Basque case

Irimia’s primary study shows Romanian direct-object marking with pe in a range of configurations. The attested Pe cine au prezentat? asks whom they introduced, with pe required in that object question. This is a direct-object construction, not a statement about placing somebody on a surface. A Basque-to-Romanian translation should preserve the introduced person’s role instead of interpreting pe through its separate locative meaning.

The study also distinguishes contexts where marking is optional from contexts where it is required, and explicitly warns against reducing the distribution to a simple specificity rule. Its discussion includes negative pronouns and interrogatives as well as referential nouns. Therefore neither being human nor being identifiable supplies a complete universal instruction to insert or delete pe. First establish what kind of object expression the Basque source requires in Romanian—a name, a question word, an indefinite or another construction—then assess the target marking within that configuration.

A noun and a matching clitic can refer to one participant

Hill’s research gives Ion l-a admirat pe prietenul lui as a modern Romanian illustration of admiring a friend, with a full object phrase and a matching short accusative pronoun. These expressions do not introduce two admired people. This is a useful check for Basque readers accustomed to participant information appearing both in a noun phrase and in auxiliary morphology: repeated reference in target grammar is not automatically repeated meaning.

At the same time, Basque auxiliary agreement and Romanian clitic doubling should not be equated as identical mechanisms. Hill examines the historical development of the Romanian construction, while Irimia documents several modern object configurations with different doubling possibilities. For this direction, read a short target pronoun together with its full noun phrase and the verb rather than deleting it as a duplicate. Confirm that they identify the same source participant where doubling is intended. That preserves the original actor-object relationship while allowing Romanian to express a single object through more than one grammatical element.
