Basque to Brazilian Portuguese: addressing one person without mistaking grammatical person

Zu is singular despite its historical morphology

Laka’s Basque grammar explains that zu developed from an earlier plural address form into a polite singular, while zuek became the specifically plural form. Modern interpretation must therefore follow the addressee count, not the historical shape of the agreement. A Brazilian Portuguese translation addressing one person should not become plural merely because a Basque auxiliary resembles forms used elsewhere in the paradigm for groups.

The grammar also distinguishes familiar hi from zu and describes gender distinctions restricted to parts of familiar second-person agreement. Those distinctions concern the addressed person in the relevant construction. They are not general masculine and feminine conjugations for every participant. When translating a Basque personal request, recover who is addressed and the intended relationship before selecting Brazilian Portuguese wording. One listener, several listeners and a familiar conversation are separate pieces of information; the target cannot recover them by copying one source ending mechanically.

Você refers to the listener with third-person agreement

Carlos Alvarenga’s Ciberdúvidas response on volta and volte explains the difference between the person being addressed and the grammatical person of the verb. In Brazilian usage, você addresses the listener but combines with third-person forms. This provides a direct warning for Basque speakers: a Portuguese verb in that form does not necessarily describe somebody outside the conversation. It can be the very person whom the Basque source addresses as you.

The response discusses the formal imperative distinction between volta with tu and volte with você, while noting colloquial patterns and regional differences. Treat that as an explanation of the grammatical options rather than a complete map of every Brazilian speaker’s usage. For an ordinary message asking one person to return, maintain the singular addressee and the request itself. Do not turn the sentence into a statement that another person returns simply because the Portuguese form looks like third-person agreement in a paradigm.

A Brazilian command form is not a dependable pronoun detector

Scherre’s primary research on Brazilian imperatives shows why the simple tu-versus-você correspondence is insufficient for actual usage. The author describes using only você in her own speech while favouring imperative forms traditionally associated with tu. The paper investigates geographical variation and distinguishes the grammatical shape from its use in dialogue. Thus a target command such as abre cannot alone establish that the translator has selected an intimate tu relationship matching Basque hi.

The study also discusses ambiguity when imperative-shaped forms are removed from their conversational setting. Its example abri can be understood as a first-person past assertion rather than a plural command in an isolated traditional exercise. This reinforces a practical source-to-target distinction: retain the Basque sentence’s function as request, instruction or report, as well as its participant count. A short Brazilian Portuguese form must be interpreted inside that function. Match the intended interaction first; then assess whether the pronoun, verb and register form a suitable Brazilian expression, allowing for the documented variation rather than imposing one universal spoken pattern.
