Basque to Lower Sorbian: translating a journey and its purpose

Separate the destination from the action planned there

A Basque sentence about going somewhere may also contain a second activity explaining why the journey happens. Those two meanings need to survive independently in Lower Sorbian. Laka’s example gu amamari bisita egitera joan gatzaizkio describes going to grandmother to make a visit. The visiting expression supplies the purpose; the sentence does not simply identify grandmother as an object carried along on the journey. Its auxiliary additionally registers the people involved.

This matters when translating a short arrangement about visiting, collecting or searching for someone. First distinguish the journey from the intended activity and identify the participant belonging to each. A person connected with the second activity is not necessarily the destination expressed as a place. The Basque wording may make these relationships compact through case and agreement, while the Lower Sorbian construction requires a different combination of verb forms. Retaining the event structure is more reliable than assigning one target word to each visible Basque ending.

Lower Sorbian has a dedicated form after motion verbs

Stone’s grammar describes the supine as a feature of Lower Sorbian that Upper Sorbian does not share. In the literary language it follows verbs of motion. His example Źensa wjacor pojźomy rejowat expresses going dancing this evening. For a Basque journey-plus-purpose sentence, this is an important construction to recognize in a proposed Lower Sorbian translation: the second action need not appear in the ordinary dictionary infinitive form. A different ending is not automatically an error.

Stone illustrates the relationship between infinitive pisaś and supine pisat. This is a grammatical distinction, not permission to replace every final letter in every verb mechanically; his account also describes other stem patterns. He further records regional differences in the survival of the supine, including its absence in dialects east and southeast of Cottbus. The appropriate comparison here is with written Lower Sorbian, rather than an assumption that every Sorbian speaker uses the same construction. The requested target must remain Lower Sorbian throughout.

The person sought belongs to the purpose clause

Arkadiev’s comparative study includes a Lower Sorbian example meaning that the speaker will go to look for Lenka tomorrow. Its analysed fragments Lenku and pytat identify an accusative object and a supine. Lenka is the person sought in the second activity. This provides a useful check when a Basque source contains a person alongside a motion verb: identify whether that person is being visited, sought or otherwise affected by the planned activity, rather than turning every such noun into a destination.

The same study explicitly contrasts this Lower Sorbian accusative pattern with Lithuanian constructions using genitive objects. Thus a source-language case or an example from a neighbouring language cannot determine the Lower Sorbian object form by itself. Basque-to-Lower Sorbian translation needs two coordinated decisions: how to express the purpose after motion, and how the verb of that purpose treats its participant. A sentence can correctly mention the journey yet misstate the intended encounter if those decisions are collapsed. Keep the traveller, intended action and affected person distinct until the target construction has been established.
