Basque to Indonesian: ez does not by itself mean not yet

Negating an arrival does not always promise a later arrival

Emakumea ez da etorri states that the woman has not arrived in Laka’s Basque examples. An Indonesian rendering must decide whether the message simply denies arrival or specifically says not yet. The negative word ez alone does not establish an expectation that the woman will arrive later.

The Indonesian Universal Dependencies description distinguishes tidak, belum and jangan among negative particles, glossing belum as not yet and jangan as a prohibition. These distinctions matter even when a language such as Basque uses one familiar negative word across expressions whose whole constructions differ. The target particle should preserve the intended kind of negative message.

A timetable context can support not yet, but negation alone cannot

At a reception desk, an expected visitor who is still on the way can justify wording that presents arrival as pending. In a report about yesterday’s completed meeting, however, the same idea of non-arrival may record an absence from an event that has already ended. Automatically choosing belum in the second situation can imply an open possibility that the source report did not intend.

Basque emakumea ez dator is a further example in Laka, describing the woman as not coming. This need not be the same message as her not having arrived. A cancellation concerns whether the journey will happen, while a delay report concerns its progress or completion. Keep that difference before choosing the Indonesian negative expression.

The distinction affects the recipient’s next action. A host told that somebody has not arrived yet may continue waiting; a host told that somebody is not coming may stop expecting the visit. The translation should not turn a cancellation into a delay merely because both source sentences contain ez and concern the same woman.

Reported uncertainty belongs to another part of the sentence

Laka also illustrates a negative arrival sentence containing omen, with an apparently or reported interpretation. That additional element qualifies the information’s source or certainty; it does not change ez into not yet. If the Indonesian sentence expresses a report, preserve that qualification separately from the decision about whether arrival remains pending.

This prevents two independent changes from becoming entangled. A statement can report somebody else’s claim of non-arrival without predicting a later visit. Conversely, a speaker can directly observe that an expected visitor has not arrived yet. Reporting status and temporal expectation are separate dimensions, even when both influence the wording of a short arrival update.

For Basque into Indonesian, read the whole negative clause: has an arrival failed to occur, is the person not coming, or is an expected arrival still pending? Retain any reported-information qualifier on its own terms. Then choose the Indonesian negative wording that communicates that situation, rather than treating every ez as a ready-made instruction to say belum.
