Basque to Hausa: translate the answer being emphasized as well as the event

Basque word order can identify the missing answer

Laka explains Basque galdegaia as the informationally relevant phrase, commonly immediately before the verb in her affirmative examples. The question non ikusi duzu umea? asks where the child was seen. Its answer kalean ikusi duzu umea places the street expression before the verb. The sentence is not merely reporting a sighting: in that exchange it supplies the requested location.

A Hausa translation should preserve which part answers the question. If an exchange asks who saw the child instead, the relevant answer concerns the observer, even if the location and child remain unchanged. Copying the Basque surface order without recognizing that difference risks emphasizing familiar background while obscuring the information the recipient requested.

Hausa focus can affect the verbal construction

The UCLA grammar distinguishes plain and relative completive forms. It uses the latter with a fronted question word, emphasis or a relative clause. Its examples contrast Sun sha shayi, they drank tea, with Me suka sha?, what did they drink? The change is not a change from several drinkers to one; it reflects a different grammatical environment.

The same source illustrates Shayi suka sha, emphasizing tea as what they drank. This gives a concrete target-language reason to translate the Basque information structure, rather than preserve only the event and participants. A focused answer can require a different Hausa subject-associated form from a neutral announcement. The label relative does not restrict the construction to relative clauses.

Do not delete a focused Basque pronoun as redundant

Laka shows that a Basque pronoun identifiable from auxiliary agreement can nevertheless be required when it is the requested information. In her discussion, omitting the person expression is inappropriate when the question specifically asks who saw the child. Recoverable grammatical person and an explicit answer to who are not the same communicative contribution.

For a Hausa version of such an exchange, identify whether the source pronoun names the answer, contrasts one observer with another or merely repeats an established participant. A mechanical instruction to omit all recoverable pronouns would erase the first two functions. Conversely, inserting emphasis into a neutral Basque report would add a contrast that the source need not contain.

Keep grammatical roles separate from focus

Goenaga distinguishes Basque question forms by case: the case system identifies different roles around the predicate, including ergative and dative participants. A question about who acts and a question about whom an action affects are not interchangeable merely because both place a person at the centre of attention.

When adapting the exchange into Hausa, retain the role of the requested participant as well as its prominence. The UCLA examples show that questions and emphasis can share a relative-form environment, but their shared form does not turn an object question into a subject question.

A useful translation of a Basque question-and-answer sequence therefore preserves three connected details: the reported event, the participant or circumstance being requested, and the answer’s focus. Those details explain target-form changes that would otherwise look like unnecessary variation in a familiar verb.
