Basque to Gujarati: beginning an event does not always imply an agent

A Basque weather auxiliary does not name a hidden person

The Basque teaching service HABE recommends euria hasi du for rain beginning, using an edun-type auxiliary rather than the ordinary izan form in this weather expression. This construction does not mean that somebody possesses the rain or deliberately starts it. Its auxiliary belongs to the source language’s way of describing weather.

A Gujarati weather update should therefore retain the onset of rain without inventing a person responsible for it. The ordinary dictionary gloss of du as has is insufficient evidence for a possession statement. HABE’s advice is specifically about this Basque weather construction; it should not be expanded into a rule that every predicate meaning begin has identical auxiliary behavior.

Grammatical case is not a universal test for conscious action

Goenaga discusses weather predicates that use du-type forms without an overt ergative subject. His examples include changes involving daylight, darkness and cold as well as rain. The presence of the auxiliary alone consequently does not establish an omitted human actor. A report about the environment may be complete without naming one.

The chapter also distinguishes structural case from spatial adpositions. A Basque expression naming the place where rain begins identifies a setting, not necessarily a causer. In a report contrasting conditions at two locations, preserve which place is affected while resisting the temptation to turn the nearest noun into the subject responsible for the weather.

Gujarati beginning constructions can express a different contrast

Hook and Modi investigate Gujarati phasal maaND constructions, where the case pattern can vary with syntactic and semantic conditions. Their discussion goes beyond the language’s ordinary tense-related ergative pattern. It does not support replacing every Basque du construction with a Gujarati ergative phrase.

Their attested chokro caal-vaa maaND-y-o describes a boy beginning to walk, with a nominative subject. A contrasting literary example gives ergative marking to a stone that begins to flee. The authors relate that unusual case choice to a dream narrative presenting events with a will of their own. The stone example is therefore evidence of a particular literary effect, not an everyday weather formula.

Preserve onset without adding intention

For a Basque account of rain beginning during a journey, the essential change is from no rain to rain at the relevant time and place. A Gujarati choice that introduces deliberate control would add a different interpretation. Conversely, a fictional Basque narrative that personifies an environmental event may deliberately supply such agency; that meaning comes from the account, not simply its auxiliary.

Goenaga’s weather examples and the Gujarati phasal study together show why the same broad idea of beginning requires construction-level reading. Identify whether the Basque passage presents a weather event, a person starting an activity or a literary actor. Then preserve the onset and participant relationship in Gujarati without assuming that matching case names express matching intentions.
