Basque to Galician: preserve uncertainty when translating negative reports

A short particle can qualify the whole Basque report

Laka contrasts emakumea ez da etorri, the woman has not arrived, with emakumea ez omen da etorri, rendered as apparently the woman has not arrived. Removing the small intervening particle produces a more direct assertion. In a Galician message about an expected visitor, the difference concerns the status of the report, not whether the visitor is expected at all.

Her grammar allows certain particles between ez and the finite verb even though ordinary phrases cannot intervene there. This is a reason to read the negative construction as a unit. A particle in that position is not automatically an unrelated word to drop while reversing Basque word order into a natural Galician sentence.

Seica can retain a qualified assertion

The Real Academia Galega defines seica as expressing doubt about what is said while allowing that it is probably true. Its attested Seica van casar este verán qualifies a report about an expected marriage that summer. The adverb does not itself identify which person supplied the information. That distinction matters if a Basque source explicitly names a source elsewhere.

For the Basque arrival message, a Galician qualifying expression must remain connected to the negative proposition: apparently the arrival has not occurred. A translation stating a definite non-arrival and adding a vague uncertain time would change what is qualified. The uncertainty concerns the report’s truth, not necessarily the appointment time or the identity of the visitor.

The dictionary also illustrates seica in a question-like reproach about not seeing. Consequently, the presence of the word is not enough to classify every Galician sentence as a neutral secondhand news report. Keep the original Basque speech act: a qualified update should not acquire a scolding tone merely because a dictionary supplies a striking example.

Disque offers another documented reporting expression

The Academy defines disque with reference to what appears to be the case or what is said. Its example Eu non sei, pero disque non había outra solución separates the speaker’s lack of knowledge from a report that there was no other solution. This demonstrates that a negative proposition can remain inside the qualified report.

In a Basque account containing both a personal comment and an uncertain negative update, preserve that separation in Galician. The writer may know the booking exists while only having a report about the visitor’s absence. Making both clauses certain, or making both equally doubtful, would remove a distinction that the source actually communicates.

An uncertain negative statement is still different from a question

Laka separately illustrates ez ote dator emakumea? as a question about whether the woman might not be coming. Her examples distinguish interrogative ote from particles in a declarative negative construction. Do not turn a Basque question into a Galician announcement just because both involve uncertainty and non-arrival.

The Academy lists seica and disque as synonyms within these relevant lexical uses, but that does not establish a fixed one-to-one table for every Basque particle. Match the complete proposition, its negative scope and the writer’s question or assertion. Those three features determine whether the recipient receives a tentative update or is being asked to resolve it.
