Basque to Divehi: that item beside you is different from one away from both speakers

Keep the listener’s position in the picture

In a Basque handover instruction, that can identify an item beside the listener rather than an object far away. Divehi also distinguishes proximity to the speaker, proximity to the addressee and elsewhere. Preserving that reference helps someone select the right bag or document instead of treating every object beyond the speaker’s reach as equally distant.

Itziar Laka describes Basque hau as closer to the speaker, hori as closer to the person addressed and hura as close to neither. Her tree examples show the three demonstratives in otherwise comparable phrases. The distinction concerns the participants’ viewpoints, not a fixed distance measured in metres.

Amalia Gnanadesikan’s Divehi grammar similarly describes mi as near the speaker, ti or tiya as near the audience and e as elsewhere. She notes that ti is more common in speech, while tiya often appears in writing. These descriptions offer a useful comparison without requiring every occurrence in discourse to be translated through a mechanical replacement table.

A desk handover should identify the intended object

Imagine a Basque coordinator arranging folders with a Divehi-speaking colleague. One folder lies beside the coordinator, one beside the colleague and another on a shelf across the room. This is an original office scenario. A request directed at the colleague can distinguish the nearby folder from the shelf folder even though neither is next to the coordinator.

If the source supplies a colour, reference number or shelf location, keep that identifying information alongside the demonstrative. It helps the recipient recover the intended object when the message is read later or the participants move. Do not invent a shelf location merely because a distant demonstrative occurs.

A forwarded quotation adds another complication. The original speaker’s here or this does not automatically become the forwarding person’s location. Preserve the quoted setting when it is known, or clarify the object through actual identifying details. Changing the viewpoint silently can send the colleague to the wrong folder.

The demonstrative alone may not establish the number

Basque demonstratives have distinct plural forms in Laka’s account, illustrated with groups of trees. Gnanadesikan explains that Divehi demonstratives do not inflect for number: mi can correspond to this or these. A change in visible form across the translation therefore does not itself prove that several folders have become one.

Check the complete target phrase for the intended group and any source quantity. If the coordinator asks for three folders, preserve the three rather than expecting the demonstrative to carry all the counting information. Conversely, do not infer several objects simply because a demonstrative appears near a plural-looking expression elsewhere in the message.

Both grammars also place demonstratives within wider discourse functions, beyond physically pointing at an object. In the handover scenario, first establish whether the writer means an object on the desk or something already mentioned in the conversation. Then check participant viewpoint, identifying details and quantity together. That preserves the practical instruction without making distance or number claims that the source does not support.
