Basque to Czech: establish the subject before checking agreement

A familiar Basque ending can leave a role unresolved

Basque case marking supplies important participant information, but not every visible ending has a unique interpretation in isolation. Vela-Plo, Erdocia and Laka examine plural demonstratives such as hauek and horiek whose absolutive and ergative forms coincide. In their experimental sentences, the later verb helps resolve which participant acts and which is affected. A Czech translation should therefore not commit to the first noun as actor simply because that is the easiest initial reading.

The study finds an agent-first processing preference in its task. That preference is evidence about how readers initially analyse sentences, not a grammatical rule requiring every Basque sentence to start with the agent. For an account involving two groups, read through the predicate and surrounding situation before assigning Czech subject and object roles. A translation can include all the right nouns and still reverse the event if an early prediction about the first phrase is never reconsidered.

Basque agreement may track an object as well as an actor

Itziar Laka’s grammar illustrates Nik liburuak irakurri ditut and the corresponding past construction with nituen. The plural element in the auxiliary reflects the books, an absolutive object, even as the form and position of the actor-related marking change. An assumption that every plural clue on a verb must identify its subject would therefore be misleading here; for Czech output, determine what each source agreement component actually tracks.

The case chapter also contrasts an arriving wolf with a wolf caught by a hunter: the wolf is absolutive in both, despite occupying different participant roles. Czech must express those roles through its own clause and case system. Do not label every Basque absolutive phrase the Czech subject, nor treat every source auxiliary component as needing a separate target pronoun. The useful source information is who arrived, who caught, and what was caught, rather than a requirement to reproduce the Basque inventory of grammatical pieces.

Czech agreement follows the selected subject’s grammatical properties

The Czech Language Institute explains that past participles agree with the subject and that grammatical gender matters. Its examples include a feminine noun for personalities even when the people concerned can be men or women. Once the Basque participants are identified, the target agreement must consequently be evaluated with the actual Czech subject noun, rather than an assumption about the people’s biological sex.

The guide also notes the special behaviour of dítě: singular child is neuter, but its plural děti takes feminine agreement. A Basque report about several children can therefore require Czech agreement that a reader cannot predict from the singular dictionary form alone. These distinctions arise after resolving the actor and affected participant. Correct Czech gender agreement attached to the wrong participant still describes the wrong event; correct participant roles with an unsuitable agreement ending still leave a grammatical problem. Keeping those stages separate makes the target easier to assess without imposing Czech subject patterns on Basque source morphology.
