Basque to Simplified Chinese: describing how an action is performed

Praise of an action is not a label for the person

A Basque comment can describe somebody as skilled or describe how they performed one action. Mandarin needs to preserve that distinction. Calling a person good and saying they sing well do not convey the same assessment, even if both contain a favourable descriptive word. The structure must show what the praise applies to.

Goenaga distinguishes adjective phrases modifying nouns from descriptive material used as a predicate, and discusses degree expressions with adjectives and adverbs. His examples include a statement describing a girl as quite skilled. When translating such a description into Mandarin, identify whether the Basque phrase evaluates the person, a particular performance or the degree of a property before choosing the target pattern.

Mandarin can place the evaluation after the action

Tokyo University of Foreign Studies illustrates 他唱得不太好。 as a statement that he does not sing very well. In this construction 得 links the verb to the following evaluation. The negative belongs inside the evaluative part; it does not say that the person fails to sing at all. This distinction matters when translating Basque feedback about a performance rather than reporting whether it occurred.

The same lesson asks 他跑得快不快? about whether someone runs fast. The repeated positive-negative element concerns speed, not whether the person runs. A Basque question about the quality or speed of an activity should retain that particular focus in Mandarin. Turning it into a question about participation would invite an answer to a different question.

A manner expression before the verb uses another structure

The university’s lesson on 地 illustrates 细心地算, calculating carefully. Here the manner expression precedes the verb, with 地 connecting it to the action. This is structurally different from the post-verbal 得 construction. The two characters share a pronunciation in these uses but should not be treated as interchangeable spellings wherever Basque supplies an adverb.

That lesson explicitly presents tendencies rather than a rule requiring 地 with every manner expression. It lists cases where the marker may be present or absent. Consequently, a Basque description of careful work does not justify mechanically inserting 地 after every translated descriptive word. Choose the Mandarin construction as a whole, including what is being modified and where the descriptive material belongs.

An object can change how the evaluation is arranged

The 得 lesson also illustrates fluent Chinese-speaking with the language object followed by a repeated speaking verb before the complement. It allows the first verb to be omitted in the alternative pattern. For a Basque statement about speaking a named language well, this explains why Mandarin may repeat a verb or place the language before the verb carrying the evaluation.

Goenaga’s account also distinguishes plain description, degree and comparison. A Basque statement that someone performs well is not automatically a claim that they perform better than another person. The Mandarin evaluation should keep any actual comparison separate from simple praise. Neither a degree word nor a well-formed complement supplies an unnamed competitor.

For this pair, first establish whether the source reports an action, evaluates its manner or compares its quality. Then retain the relevant object and the scope of any negative. This preserves useful feedback without changing a limited performance assessment into a broader statement about somebody’s character or ability.
