Basque to Albanian: a repeated recipient reference need not introduce another person

Count participants rather than reference words

A Basque message may name somebody and also reflect that person in its auxiliary. Albanian can likewise refer to an object through a full expression and a short pronoun in the same construction. When checking a translation, counting visible reference words is not a reliable way to count the people involved.

Laka illustrates a named dative participant alongside auxiliary agreement in her examples about a frog appearing to Aitziber and being given to Aitziber. The person’s name and the corresponding agreement do not identify two recipients. The whole clause establishes a single relationship involving that participant.

The Albanian Universal Dependencies documentation describes dative clitic doubling, illustrated by a construction meaning this allows them to, with both u and atyre. It also notes that accusative doubling can occur. This is target-language evidence that a short object form beside a fuller object expression need not mean someone else has been added.

An archive permission message has several distinct roles

Imagine a Basque archivist telling an Albanian-speaking coordinator that visiting researchers may consult a collection. The researchers receive permission; the coordinator receives the message. This original access scenario requires distinguishing the audience of the correspondence from the people authorised to use the material. Those groups may overlap, but the source must establish that.

If the Albanian output contains a short form alongside the expression naming the researchers, do not remove it merely because it appears repetitive. First determine whether the construction refers to the same authorised group. Conversely, a genuinely separate expression naming the coordinator should not be absorbed into that group simply to make the sentence shorter.

The permission may concern consultation in the reading room rather than copying, borrowing, or publishing the material. Preserve the allowed activity as carefully as the recipient. Correctly identifying the researchers is insufficient if the translation broadens their permission to actions that the archivist never authorised.

Separate permission, notification, and actual use

A later message might confirm that the coordinator notified the researchers. Notification does not itself establish that the researchers used the collection. Keep the sender, the people notified, and the participants in any reported visit attached to their respective actions instead of letting a repeated pronoun merge the events.

Albanian documentation also notes that pronominal subjects are often omitted. A sentence without an overt subject pronoun can therefore still describe a particular person’s action. Use the source and surrounding exchange to resolve that actor; do not assume that the nearest visible noun must perform every subsequent action.

Before reusing the translated message, trace the permission and the notification independently. Establish who authorises access, who is authorised, and who receives each update. Preserve any explicit limits on the activity. A clear translation can contain more grammatical references than people while still maintaining exactly the source’s participants and commitments.
