Bashkir to Querétaro Otomi: distinguish an identifying phrase from a statement
Changing the source order can change its job
Poppe’s Bashkir grammar contrasts бала яҡшы, the child is good, with яҡшы бала, the good child. One asserts a property; the other identifies a child through that property. A translator should determine which construction the source uses before looking for an equivalent descriptive word.
This is practical in a short label or instruction. A Bashkir phrase selecting the good item should not become an independent sentence asserting that an item is good. Conversely, an assessment of someone or something needs to remain a complete assertion rather than a bare descriptive label.
Querétaro Otomi does not necessarily package such properties as a separate adjective plus an equivalent of is. Palancar’s analysis of San Ildefonso Tultepec describes property meanings expressed through verb-like or noun-like elements and particular compound constructions. The intended source function must guide the target construction; the English dictionary label adjective is not a placement rule.
A compound element is not always a free descriptive word
Palancar distinguishes property elements inside compounds from forms used as independent predicates. A form that helps build a word naming a kind of object cannot automatically stand alone to assert the corresponding property. Reusing a recognizable element in the wrong construction may therefore change the grammar even when its general meaning seems appropriate.
Bashkir also has productive word formation and descriptive compounds, but that does not establish matching productivity in Otomi. A source compound should first be interpreted as a lexical item or a composed description. Only then can the target expression be selected.
For a Bashkir description of a large natural feature, for example, decide whether the words name an established type of feature or merely report its size. A target compound recorded for one meaning is not a general template for every source phrase containing large. Keep the lexical identity and the current description separate while choosing the target construction.
Location and ownership remain additional information
A Bashkir noun can carry possessive and case suffixes, identifying both an owner and the noun’s relationship to an event. A descriptive label does not replace those meanings. If the source identifies an object in someone’s house, the translation needs the selected object, its description and its location.
The INALI standard gives nguu for house and hár nguu for in his or her house. These examples show that a fuller location expression contributes information beyond the house noun. They should not be copied as a universal equivalent of every Bashkir possessed location, because the actual owner may be the speaker, listener or another person.
Retain the target spelling distinctions too: doubled vowels and other marks follow Otomi conventions. The source Cyrillic letters and endings cannot be reproduced through a cosmetic script substitution. The evidence discussed here comes from a named Querétaro variety and from the broader INALI writing standard, which recognizes internal variation. For a particular recipient, check the appropriate local expression while preserving the original distinction between naming an object and making a statement about it.
