Bangla to Inuktitut: two people and an action’s recipient can be encoded inside endings

A plural Bangla verb leaves a number distinction unresolved

Dimock, Bhattacharji, and Chatterjee show Bangla person endings shared by corresponding singular and plural pronouns. A first-person verb can accompany either আমি or আমরা. Inuktut Tusaalanga’s South Qikiqtaaluk lessons distinguish singular, dual, and plural, including separate forms for two participants and three or more.

This means that Bangla আমরা does not supply every number choice required by an Inuktitut sentence. If it means a speaker and one companion, the target needs the dual rather than the form for a larger group. Counting participants is a grammatical requirement here, not an optional way to make the translation more detailed. The illustrations discussed below are from South Qikiqtaaluk teaching materials, rather than claims about identical forms in every community.

A dual object is different from two owners

Tusaalanga illustrates an ordinary noun contrast with matu, one door, matuuk, two doors, and matuit, three or more doors. Its possession lesson introduces another distinction: endings can identify both the owners and how many things are owned. Thus a reference to two houses and a reference to one house belonging to two people cannot be built by treating every occurrence of two alike.

The Bangla course uses আমার for my and illustrates quantity separately from the owner. An Inuktitut possessive expression combines information that may be spread across those source words. For a Bangla description of shared accommodation, whether the group shares one dwelling or occupies two dwellings directly affects the target ending, even when the people involved remain unchanged.

Seeing you and being seen by you require different endings

The University of Texas explains that Bangla verbs carry person information, and that a conjugated verb can constitute a clause without an explicit subject pronoun. Inuktitut also allows participant information in a verb, but its double endings can identify both the actor and the person receiving the action.

Tusaalanga contrasts takugikkit, I see you, with takuginnga, you see me. These are not interchangeable alternatives for a general seeing event. When a Bangla message has an object pronoun elsewhere in the clause, that object must be integrated into the correct target participant relationship. Merely choosing a first-person ending because the source contains আমি would overlook what the verb also needs to say about its object.

An omitted pronoun need not mean an omitted participant

Tusaalanga explains that independent pronouns often appear for emphasis or contrast because verb endings already identify participants. Bangla likewise need not repeat an overt subject wherever its verbal morphology makes the person recoverable. Consequently, a shorter Inuktitut sentence is not necessarily missing the Bangla speaker or listener.

The important distinction is between leaving an independently recoverable pronoun unwritten and leaving number unresolved. A Bangla source can clearly identify we while failing to distinguish exactly two from a larger group. The target’s compact form may still require that additional information. Repeating an independent pronoun does not remove the need to select the correct participant and number endings.
