Assamese to Basque: follow the actor, recipient, and phrase ending

An ending can mark the whole phrase

Basque case marking normally occurs at the end of a noun phrase. If the noun is followed by an adjective, the ending can appear on that adjective rather than directly on the noun. Assamese readers should therefore avoid checking only whether the translated noun itself contains a visible counterpart of a source case marker.

The University of the Basque Country grammar illustrates artzainak as an ergative form and artzainari as a dative form built on the same shepherd reference. Those forms identify different grammatical relationships. For an Assamese message about a person giving or receiving something, the recognizable participant name or noun does not alone establish which role the target assigns.

Read each complete phrase, including any modifier at its end. A change there can carry information that Assamese places on another part of the source expression. Do not add the same ending to every word in a phrase to make the target look more consistently marked.

The auxiliary can refer to more than one participant

Basque finite verbs and auxiliaries can cross-reference absolutive, ergative, and dative participants. In a transfer event, the actor, the thing transferred, and the recipient can all matter to the target construction. This is more than finding an equivalent of the main action verb.

Assamese also distinguishes sentence roles through case forms and postpositions, including source and destination expressions. Start by identifying those roles in the source before judging the Basque auxiliary. A short target form may contain grammatical information about several participants rather than represent a dispensable extra verb.

For a handover request, check three independent facts: who gives the item, what the item is, and to whom it is given. The target can sound grammatical after an actor and recipient are reversed. A role-by-role reading catches that error more directly than comparing the order of the nouns on screen.

Respect and counting need their own interpretation

Assamese honorific information can appear in pronouns, verb agreement, and human classifiers. Basque should express an appropriate relationship without copying an Assamese classifier as though it were a separately named object. Preserve the actual number of people and distinguish it from respectful treatment.

Bharadwaj’s Assamese examples show that honorific verb agreement can be the same with singular and plural subjects. Consequently, a respectful source verb is not sufficient evidence of a group. Resolve the actual audience from the surrounding message before accepting the target’s participant agreement.

Finally, review any ownership expression separately from the giving or receiving roles. A person can own an item without being the person handing it over. This direction benefits from a compact factual paraphrase before translation: name the actor, owner, recipient, count, and any respectful relationship. The Basque output may package that information in phrase endings and auxiliaries, but the final arrangement must remain the one the Assamese speaker intended.
