Arabic to Kinyarwanda: making an invitation’s date and answer unambiguous

Translate the time reference with its verb

An Arabic invitation may say غداً for tomorrow or أمس for yesterday. Kinyarwanda ejo appears in both past and future contexts; the surrounding expression and verb establish which time is intended. A translation containing ejo is not enough, by itself, to prove that the event is tomorrow. Read it with the complete sentence.

The Peace Corps course gives Uzaboneka ejo? for asking whether someone will be available tomorrow. It also uses ejo in past-event lessons. For an actual appointment, include the calendar date as well as the relative day. A message read after midnight or forwarded a day later can otherwise point to a different date from the one you intended.

Separate availability from accepting the invitation

A question about whether a person is free does not necessarily invite them to a particular event. State the event, place, and proposed time in your Arabic text before asking for a reply. Keep an availability answer separate from any later confirmation of attendance.

Kinyarwanda expressions in the course distinguish Nzaboneka, “I will be available,” from Sinzaboneka, “I will not be available.” The negative meaning belongs to the verbal form, not merely to a separate word you can look for at the start. When copying a reply, keep the whole form intact.

For a group invitation, record each person’s actual answer. Do not turn one person’s agreement into a response for the whole family. Arabic dual and plural forms can specify different group sizes; make the expected number explicit if seating, transport, or meals depend on it.

Preserve what the reply commits to

A courteous Arabic reply can acknowledge a message while leaving attendance undecided. Translate the practical commitment explicitly: attending, unavailable, or waiting to confirm. Do not remove a condition such as needing to arrange transport just to make the translated answer shorter.

If you are communicating on behalf of another person, identify that person before the reply. A first-person translated sentence will otherwise sound as though you are accepting for yourself. Keep the event name with the response when sharing it into a different conversation, so “I will come” does not lose its destination.

Update the whole arrangement when plans change

Kinyarwanda future forms in the teaching material include a tense marker within the verb. Arabic future expressions also interact with the verbal form. Moving an event into the past or cancelling it therefore calls for a complete revised translation, rather than changing only a day word in an old message.

Send a change notice that states the old date, the new date, and whether the place is unchanged. This lets the recipient recognize which invitation is being corrected. For a cancellation, say that the event is cancelled rather than merely saying that you are unavailable; those statements have different consequences for everyone else.

Save a confirmed invitation together with its date, location, and attendance status. Retain place names as used by the venue. A useful translation memory should help you recover the agreed arrangement, not encourage reuse of an earlier proposal after its details have changed.
