Persian to Kinyarwanda: changing the first part of my can count more children

Persian puts a possessive relationship after its head

The Texas ezāfe lesson gives ketāb-e man, my book, and qalam-e to, your pen. The item comes before the independent pronoun identifying its possessor. Kinyarwanda also places a possessive expression after the noun in the cited course, but the target possessive contains agreement information that the Persian linking sound alone does not supply.

This matters when a Persian family message changes from one relative to several relatives while keeping the same speaker as the reference point. A Kinyarwanda possessive can change because the head noun’s number changes. That alteration need not mean that the speaker has been replaced by several possessors.

Kinyarwanda separates the head-related prefix from the owner-related ending

Cox and Gakuba’s course contrasts umwana wa-njye, my child, with abana ba-njye, my children. The first part changes with the noun’s singular or plural class, while -njye retains first-person singular reference. The examples therefore express one speaker’s relationship to different numbers of children, not one child belonging to different numbers of people.

Abana be and abana babo retain plural children while changing the owner reference from his or her to their. The precise directional lesson is to keep the Persian possessor pronoun’s reference separate from the target noun’s agreement. If man identifies one speaker, a plural agreement prefix on the Kinyarwanda possessive should not be translated conceptually as our. The children can be plural while the person whose children they are remains singular.

The course further warns that -njye should not simply be used as an independent me in unrelated contexts. Its role inside the possessive construction matters. A translator should not extract that ending and insert it wherever a Persian sentence contains man as a subject or object.

A second-person possessor requires another count decision

The Kinyarwanda course distinguishes second-person singular -we from plural -nyu in its personal possessive paradigm. Persian šomā, however, can address one person respectfully as well as several people, as the Texas pronoun lesson explains. Matching a plurality-associated Persian form mechanically could therefore change the number of actual addressees.

In a letter concerning one recipient’s children, identify that recipient as singular if the exchange establishes a single respectful addressee. The children’s plurality remains a separate fact, requiring their own head-related agreement. The target possessive must not confuse several children with several people receiving the letter.

For this pair, three pieces of information need distinct treatment: which family member or object is named, whether that head is singular or plural, and who identifies its possessive relationship. Kinyarwanda distributes those contributions within the possessive expression. Persian supplies them through the larger noun phrase and discourse, so the translated form should preserve their separate counts rather than imitate the ezāfe sound with one invariant word.
