Amharic to Uzbek Latin: separate gender, respect and the role of an ending

One Uzbek pronoun can cover several Amharic references

Amharic distinguishes masculine and feminine third-person reference. Uzbek u can correspond to he, she, or it, with its interpretation supplied by context. A target translation using the same pronoun for two source forms has not necessarily changed the participant’s identity. It has left a distinction unexpressed that the source pronoun encoded.

The distinction can still matter to the message. In an Amharic account involving a man, a woman, and an object, repeated u references may not track the participants as clearly as the source did. Keep a name or role at a genuine change of actor, especially where source gender alone identifies the transition. Do not infer a person’s gender from an Uzbek noun or profession merely to fill the gap. The source establishes identity; the target’s lack of gendered pronouns does not authorise an invented identity.

Respect and actual plurality require different checks

Amharic has respectful forms as well as ordinary singular and plural person reference. Uzbek siz can address one person politely or several people. A target form associated with plural reference therefore need not increase the number of Amharic recipients. Check the salutation and named audience before deciding whether the sentence concerns one person or a group.

The source’s relationship also matters in requests. Uzbek polite imperative morphology differs from the bare familiar stem, so replacing only a pronoun may not preserve the whole Amharic polite request. Keep the recipient and action together. A source instruction can retain the correct dictionary verb yet acquire an unintended level of familiarity if the predicate is treated independently. Conversely, a courteous target form should not be interpreted as a literal command to several people merely because the addressee is one respected individual.

Latin script does not make grammatical material optional

Amharic can attach ownership and reference information to nouns. Uzbek also attaches case and possession material, but its endings follow the target system. Uyda illustrates at home, with the location relation attached to the noun. The longer target form is not a misspelling of the dictionary word for home. In an Amharic location statement, check the expressed relationship before removing an unfamiliar ending.

The Latin spelling itself needs attention independently from the grammar. Uzbek spelling references and recent alphabet reform announcements document more than one convention in circulation. An announcement about changing letter forms does not mean that every existing name or document should be silently respelled. Keep the target text internally consistent and preserve identifiers exactly where their original form matters. If an Amharic name has an established Uzbek rendering, use the supplied or documented identity rather than derive a new one solely from an alphabet chart. Choosing Latin output resolves the script request; it does not eliminate the need to interpret the source’s person, case, and ownership relationships.
