Amharic to Basque: several participants can meet inside one auxiliary

Rich verb structure does not mean identical structure

Amharic identifies its subject through verbal agreement and can attach an object pronoun to the verb. Basque also has extensive participant marking, including forms that cross-reference different arguments of the same action. This resemblance is useful, but it is not a reason to align the pieces of an Amharic word with Basque suffixes one by one.

The Amharic example ነገረኝ means he told me. For a Basque rendering, track the teller, the recipient, and whatever information is conveyed as separate meaning roles first. The target auxiliary belongs to a Basque construction with its own agreement requirements; the source's single written word is not a target assembly diagram.

The end of the noun phrase can carry the case

Basque case marking normally appears at the end of a noun phrase. If an adjective follows the noun, the phrase's case suffix can appear on the adjective instead. An Amharic reader who examines only the noun itself may therefore overlook where the relationship has actually been expressed.

This matters in a description of a recipient or destination. Keep a person's name together with the descriptive words that identify them, and compare the complete target phrase with the Amharic original. Do not strip an adjective's ending merely because the dictionary entry has a shorter form. That ending can link the whole phrase to the action.

Being and staying are not a single lookup

The documented Basque verbs izan and egon both have uses associated with being, while egon also means stay. Forms such as da and dago belong to these different paradigms. They are useful landmarks, but not interchangeable spellings selected to match the visual length of an Amharic copular expression.

When translating an Amharic status update, distinguish identity or characterization from where someone is or remains. A statement identifying a person's role is different from telling a visitor where that person can currently be found. State the actual location in the source when it is the point of the message, rather than expecting the word for being to carry the entire practical meaning.

Gender clues and negative scope

Amharic distinguishes masculine and feminine singular addressees and marks other participant distinctions in its conjugation. Basque generally does not organize noun agreement around grammatical gender, although certain verbal address distinctions do involve gender. Do not assume every source gender cue must become a gendered Basque pronoun.

The Basque negative ez is a further reminder to read constructions rather than isolated pieces. Establish whether the Amharic sentence denies an event, states an inability, or directs someone not to act. Then compare the target participants and negative scope together. A correctly translated action with the wrong affected person, or a negative attached to the wrong proposition, can reverse an otherwise natural-looking message.
