Amharic to Afrikaans: unpack the person, the relationship and the greeting
Two Amharic forms of ‘you’ can become the same Afrikaans word
Amharic distinguishes masculine አንተ and feminine አንቺ in familiar singular address. Afrikaans jy does not make that gender distinction. A translation using the same jy for these two source forms has not necessarily lost track of the recipient; the target pronoun simply carries different grammatical information.
Respect is a separate question. Afrikaans u may preserve a respectful relationship where an Amharic construction calls for it. Do not decide between jy and u from the addressee's gender alone. A familiar sentence to a woman and a respectful sentence to a man differ in more than which person is male or female. Read the source address and verb together before choosing the Afrikaans tone.
Information attached to the Amharic verb may need separate pronouns
Amharic verbal morphology can identify an object through an attached suffix, including person, number and relevant gender distinctions. Afrikaans may express that participant with a separate word such as my, jou, hom or haar. A longer Afrikaans clause is therefore not automatically padded: it may make an attached source relationship explicit.
For a message about giving or sending something, identify the actor, the item and its recipient before counting target words. Do not omit the recipient merely because no independent Amharic pronoun appears. Conversely, do not translate both an identifying noun and its agreement marker as two different people. They can refer to the same participant.
Afrikaans also distinguishes subject and object forms in certain pronouns: hy differs from hom, and sy from haar. A name's position in the Amharic sentence is not a reliable shortcut for selecting one. Recover the person's role in the complete clause, then place the Afrikaans subject, verb and object according to the target construction.
Translate a greeting as the social act it performs
The courteous morning expression እንደምን አደሩ can function as an Afrikaans Goeiemôre. Reconstructing every component as a literal question about the night can suggest that the sender wants a detailed report instead of offering a greeting. Keep a literal explanation only when the expression itself is being discussed.
Likewise, ይቅርታ can introduce an interruption or an apology. Afrikaans Verskoon my suits some attention-getting uses, while Jammer can acknowledge a mistake. Read the following request or explanation before choosing. A person asking for directions does not necessarily admit responsibility for an earlier event.
A change of script should preserve the person's identity
Amharic fidäl and Afrikaans Latin spelling organise written sounds differently. An official Latin spelling supplied by a person is more useful for a contact record than a fresh letter-by-letter guess. Preserve that established form while translating surrounding descriptions and titles.
Do not infer a Western-style inherited surname merely from the final element of an Ethiopian name. Keep the supplied full name consistent across the message, signature and reference details. Translating the sentence should help the recipient identify the same person, rather than silently rearranging the name into a pattern the source did not establish.
