Afrikaans to Lingala: wanting and negation belong to the complete predicate

Ek wil is not a pair of loose target labels

The Peace Corps manual contrasts Nalingi kolia and Olingi kolia in its practice of wanting to eat. The opening of the Lingala predicate changes with the participant. Afrikaans ek wil and jy wil retain the same written wil, so a source edit of only the pronoun can require a more internal target change.

For an order or personal preference, make clear whose wish is expressed. If you adapt a saved line from I want to you want, translate the entire clause again rather than replacing one detached word. A recognizable target action after the wanting expression does not prove that the right person remains its subject.

Nie can appear through a final negative pattern

The manual uses a contrast such as Nalingi kobina and Nalingi kobina te for wanting to dance versus not wanting to dance. Lingala’s te in this documented construction occupies a different position from a simple Afrikaans word-for-word negative frame. Preserve the denied proposition rather than moving target words to match nie.

Check whether the Afrikaans source denies a wish or denies the action itself. I do not want to dance and I want not to dance are related but not always the same conversational emphasis. Keep the source clause complete so the target can express what is being refused or desired, especially when the message answers a direct invitation.

A meal request should identify the actual activity

The course distinguishes eating, drinking, buying, and other actions in its drills rather than treating all food-related requests as one pattern. An Afrikaans request for something to drink and one for buying a drink have different practical meanings. State the action explicitly before judging the Lingala vocabulary.

If the source contains a modal such as wil or kan, retain that meaning as well as the food noun. A target sentence can name water correctly while changing whether the person wants it, can obtain it, or has already taken it. Read the complete predicate rather than accepting a translated menu word as evidence for the whole request.

A Latin-script result still carries attached agreement

Lingala’s verbal prefixes can express participant information inside a written word, while Afrikaans often presents it in a separate pronoun. A shorter target clause is therefore not automatically missing its subject. Conversely, inserting a translated pronoun everywhere the source has one can change emphasis without improving clarity.

For a final check, follow the speaker or recipient, the desired action, and the scope of te through the sentence. Keep the full source alongside a saved translation and regenerate it when the participant or polarity changes. These steps help preserve the practical meaning of an Afrikaans preference or refusal without treating Lingala as Afrikaans word order with a new vocabulary.
