Spanish to Lingala: él and ella need not remain two different subject pronouns

A Spanish pronoun can distinguish people by gender

Spanish Él tomó el paquete and Ella tomó el paquete identify a male or female participant respectively when used of people. The verb tomó remains third-person singular in both. Spanish can therefore distinguish two possible people through the subject pronoun even when the rest of the sentence is unchanged.

Eyamba G. Bokamba’s comparison of Lingala varieties gives Yé a-kamat-áki with the meaning he or she took. The illustrated third-person singular pronoun and agreement do not reproduce the Spanish él-versus-ella distinction. A target sentence can correctly identify a third-person singular actor without spelling out gender in that same way.

Removing a gender contrast can affect the sequence of a report

Imagine a Spanish account introducing a brother and a sister, followed by Ella tomó el paquete. The feminine pronoun helps select the sister. A Lingala continuation using the illustrated third-person form may depend more on the established discourse to identify which sibling acted. Replacing ella mechanically is not enough if both people remain equally plausible actors.

The useful response is not to add a gendered word arbitrarily to every Lingala pronoun. Where the Spanish sentence relies on the contrast to distinguish the siblings, the translation can identify the relevant person through a suitable explicit reference. Where only one person is under discussion, repeating a full description may add nothing. The need arises from a concrete ambiguity in the Spanish narrative.

This can matter when the next sentence reports handing the parcel to somebody else. If the actor in the taking sentence is misidentified, the later handover can appear to reverse direction. Preserving the action and its time is insufficient when the original pronoun also decides which previously mentioned participant performed it.

Spanish feminine grammar does not always describe a woman

The RAE explains that víctima is grammatically feminine even when it refers to a man. Thus La víctima estaba herida does not, by the feminine article and adjective alone, establish that the injured person is female. A Lingala translation should not invent a woman merely to give those Spanish agreement forms an apparent counterpart.

This differs from the explicit personal pronoun ella in the illustrated sibling account. The noun víctima has its own grammatical gender; the pronoun selecting a known woman contributes a different kind of identifying information. Treating all feminine Spanish forms as interchangeable evidence about a person’s sex would confuse these two situations.

Bokamba also documents substantial differences in noun-class agreement across Literary, Spoken, and Kinshasa Lingala. Those classes are not a replacement system for Spanish masculine and feminine labels. For the parcel narrative, first establish which human participant the Spanish author identifies and whether gender actually performs that identifying work. Then preserve the reference in an appropriate Lingala construction, rather than trying to reproduce every Spanish gender marker as a separate target distinction.
