Welsh to Vietnamese: counted books, negative possession and accents with different jobs

A Welsh numeral’s gender is not a Vietnamese classifier

Welsh distinguishes dau and dwy and can mutate the following noun, as in y ddau gae and y ddwy law. Vietnamese counted noun phrases use classifiers that organize objects through different categories. A Welsh masculine or feminine numeral therefore does not determine which classifier the target phrase needs.

NIU’s Vietnamese lesson contrasts hai cái bàn, two tables, with ba quyển từ điển, three dictionaries. The distinction is not simply between two and three: the classifier identifies the kind of counted object, with quyển appropriate to a bound volume in this pattern. Translating a Welsh request for reference books needs that object understood rather than a single generic word inserted after every number.

The lesson also allows a classifier with a number or adjective while the noun is understood from context. A target phrase that does not repeat the full Welsh noun can therefore remain informative when its reference is established. The classifier is doing grammatical work, not merely replacing the Welsh definite article.

Not having something is a complete construction

Welsh negative patterns can involve an initial change and ddim; the Foundation guide illustrates Faswn i ddim and Wnaf i ddim. Vietnamese possession and existence patterns instead use có, with không có in the negative examples taught by NIU. The target should preserve whether the Welsh sentence denies ownership or says that something does not exist in a place.

NIU also distinguishes chưa, not yet, from ordinary negation and places rồi at the end in its completed-state examples. A Welsh report that an item has not arrived yet is not interchangeable with a general statement that the item is absent. Interpret the temporal expectation before choosing the target pattern.

A Vietnamese accent is not a Welsh length instruction

Welsh uses the circumflex in forms such as ŵ to indicate a long vowel, and its spelling also distinguishes vowel sounds through letter choices. Vietnamese diacritics belong to a different system. The VNU phonetic discussion explains lexical contrasts involving tonal pitch and laryngeal features; recognizing familiar accent shapes is not enough to pronounce the target word.

A Welsh reader should consequently not strip a Vietnamese tone mark as if it were optional emphasis, nor lengthen the vowel solely because a mark resembles one used in Welsh. The target’s written vowel information and tone information need to be retained together. Removing a small mark can affect the word being read, not just the style of the line.

The VNU paper discusses regional Vietnamese varieties and studies English intonation training among Vietnamese students. Its experimental results do not measure Welsh speakers’ pronunciation. The comparison here concerns the documented Vietnamese tone system: it explains why Welsh vowel-length habits cannot serve as a complete reading guide for a Vietnamese translation.

This also separates lexical tone from the overall tune of a question. A Welsh question’s intonation should not be treated as permission to override the tone associated with each Vietnamese word. The sentence’s questioning function and its individual word identities must both survive.
