Welsh to Uyghur: a possessive-looking form can identify who acts in an embedded clause

Read a personal form within its complete construction

The Welsh Foundation grammar guide gives ei fod e within a sentence expressing what the speaker thinks about somebody. The personal element belongs to the embedded statement; the sentence is not describing a possession owned by that person. A familiar-looking possessive form therefore needs to be interpreted through its grammatical environment.

A similar caution is useful when checking Uyghur clauses embedded inside noun phrases. Asarina and Hartman’s fieldwork study documents genitive-marked subjects linked to agreement outside the embedded clause. A form that resembles an ownership construction can identify the person performing an embedded action instead.

For a Welsh report, first identify the event and its actor. Then decide whether the surrounding expression refers to a fact, a sign or an object described through that event. Do not add ownership merely because a target ending is called genitive or possessive in a grammar.

The research separates embedded actors from ordinary owners

Asarina and Hartman illustrate a construction meaning that the fact of the speaker’s departure is important. The actor of leaving receives genitive marking, with corresponding agreement on the noun for fact. This describes who left, rather than treating the fact as a physical belonging.

Their relative-clause examples also distinguish a book’s reader from its owner. The study documents an alternative with an unmarked embedded subject and explains restrictions when a separate possessor is present. The grammatical choices are connected; one cannot safely add an extra genitive form to every named participant.

These are specific patterns supported by the authors’ fieldwork. They do not establish that every Uyghur genitive expression describes an embedded actor. Ordinary possession remains possible, so the clause structure and the meaning of the surrounding noun both matter.

A report should keep the fact, actor and evidence apart

Imagine a Welsh account explaining that a volunteer’s early departure affected the closing arrangements. The relevant fact is that the volunteer left. A translation should preserve that event, not recast the sentence as a statement about something the volunteer owned or a claim that somebody else departed.

If the account instead mentions a sign that the volunteer had left, retain the distinction between evidence and the event itself. An observation suggesting departure does not necessarily have the same status as an established departure. The target’s embedded structure should not make uncertain evidence sound like confirmed knowledge.

Next check any actual belongings mentioned nearby. The volunteer may have read an organiser’s notebook before leaving. Reading the notebook does not establish ownership, and ownership does not establish who read it. Keep those relationships independent when the target uses personal endings in more than one construction.

Do not repair an unfamiliar target phrase simply by repeating every person’s name with the same ending. The cited study shows that marking and agreement interact across the phrase. Adding another apparent possessor can change or disrupt the construction rather than clarify it.

Finally, compare the finished report with the Welsh source by listing what happened, who did it, what evidence is mentioned and which objects genuinely belong to whom. This checks the intended relationships without assuming that Welsh and Uyghur distribute personal information across their clauses in identical ways.
