Welsh to Turkish: follow a descriptive clause to the noun it identifies

A description can move ahead of the noun in Turkish

The Welsh Foundation guide demonstrates descriptions with sy following the person or thing they identify. Its examples include knowing somebody who writes books and identifying a picture on a wall. When translating such material into Turkish, keeping the Welsh sequence word for word is not a reliable way to preserve the relationship.

Universal Dependencies’ Turkish documentation explains that most clauses modifying a noun precede that noun. Their subordinate structure is commonly marked through suffixes on the clause’s head. A reader may therefore encounter the descriptive action before reaching the noun that the whole phrase identifies.

For a Welsh text about books, wait until the complete target phrase is visible before deciding that the description has attached to the wrong participant. The order can change while the relationship remains intact. What matters is which noun the description modifies and which person performs the action inside it.

The person in a description need not be its head noun

The documentation gives Ali’nin okuduğu kitap for the book Ali is reading. The book is the object being identified, while Ali performs the reading within its description. Treating the first name encountered as the head of the entire phrase would give the wrong structure.

This differs from a description identifying a person through an action that person performs, such as the Welsh guide’s example of somebody writing books. Establish whether the modified noun is the reader, the writer or the work itself. Shared vocabulary about reading and writing does not make those constructions equivalent.

The Turkish reference also notes a separate ki construction with a following clause. This is an exception to the usual preceding position, rather than permission to treat every relative clause as having one mandatory word order. A target phrase should be checked in its actual construction.

A reading list needs the right connection between people and works

Imagine a Welsh reading list introducing a novelist, a book that a reviewer is reading and a review that another person wrote. The Turkish version must keep those three relationships apart. Moving a descriptive clause is acceptable; turning the reviewer into the novelist or attributing the book to its reader changes the information.

First identify the head noun of each description. Is the line naming a person, selecting a particular edition or supplying background about a review? Then trace the participants within that description. A named person can be the actor of the subordinate event without being the person the overall phrase identifies.

When a sentence contains more than one work, retain the source detail that tells readers which one is meant. A description of the book being read should not migrate onto the review merely because both nouns appear nearby. This is especially easy to miss after editing a long introduction for smoother target order.

Do not insert an extra standalone pronoun simply because the Welsh source contains an explicit person expression. The Turkish documentation treats most of these noun-modifying clauses as relative constructions and describes overt resumptive forms as limited. Check the target structure rather than repairing it to resemble Welsh.

Finally, read the translated list as a set of credits and selections: who wrote what, who read what and which item each entry recommends. Those concrete relationships provide a stronger review than comparing the positions of individual Welsh and Turkish words.
