Welsh to Tahitian: distinguish a small amount from an amount that is nearly gone

A quantity expression can also convey the writer’s assessment

A Welsh message mentioning ychydig can concern a little material or a few items. Geiriadur yr Academi lists both meanings and illustrates the expression with wine. Before translating a stock update into Tahitian, identify whether the noun concerns a countable set or an amount, then establish what the writer is saying about its adequacy.

There is a useful difference between having some supplies available and warning that supplies are scarce. Both can involve a small quantity, but they lead readers to different conclusions. A translation that preserves smallness while losing that assessment can make a shortage sound reassuring.

Do not resolve the distinction by inventing a measurement. If the Welsh source gives no number or volume, the translation should not supply one. Instead, preserve any surrounding statement showing whether the amount is sufficient, unexpectedly low or simply unspecified.

The Tahitian comparative study separates quantity from evaluation

Florent, Carole and Félix Atem distinguish positively and negatively assessed small quantities in their comparative grammar. Their discussion includes ma’a in expressions conveying some or a little, and contrasts descriptions emphasising that little remains. The assessment is part of the message, not merely a choice of more decorative wording.

They also explain that the quantity involved in te tahi ma’a depends on the situation. An ingredient needed for a cake and an amount remaining in a shop do not establish identical measures. The same expression cannot be converted into one fixed weight or serving size.

The authors discuss large quantities as assessments too: speakers may disagree about whether a given set counts as many. A Welsh writer’s description of a lot should therefore retain its evaluative character rather than become an exact target count without evidence.

Use the purpose of the supplies to check the interpretation

Imagine a Welsh note about refreshments for a small gathering. One line says that some juice remains for the guests; another warns that very little remains for a second group arriving later. A Tahitian translation should preserve the different implications, even if both containers hold a small amount.

Check what the amount is relative to. Enough for one recipe, enough for a table and enough for everyone at the gathering are different standards. If the source states the relevant group or use, keep that information attached to the quantity instead of leaving readers to apply their own standard.

Distinguish what is available from what must be bought. A request for a little more juice does not necessarily report that the existing supply is nearly exhausted. Conversely, a shortage warning should not become a casual suggestion to add variety. The target needs to preserve why the quantity is mentioned.

Where an exact count appears elsewhere in the Welsh message, retain it without assuming that it settles every assessment. A few bottles might be ample for one table and insufficient for several. The number and the judgment can both be true, and both may matter.

Finally, read the translated update as an instruction for the person arranging refreshments. Should they proceed, reserve an amount or obtain more? That consequence helps reveal whether a Welsh expression of availability has accidentally become a warning, or a warning has been softened into an assurance.
