Welsh to Slovenian: the position of no can reverse the reply

A denial of a sentence differs from correcting somebody

Welsh short-answer interpretation already depends on identifying the proposition being answered, rather than assigning a fixed meaning to the first visible verb form. Slovenian makes a related scope problem concrete through Ne motiš se versus Ne, motiš se. In the first the listener is not wrong; in the second the initial reply rejects a preceding claim and the following predicate says the listener is wrong. The comma changes how the negative attaches to the exchange.

Welsh Foundation short-answer tables make the preceding question central to interpreting a reply. A respondent may use a person-sensitive verbal answer rather than repeat the whole proposition. Translating that Welsh exchange requires establishing what is confirmed or rejected before constructing the Slovenian sentence.

For an original Welsh correction, compare telling someone their interpretation is sound with rejecting their claim and explaining that it is mistaken. A target punctuation change can reverse which of those messages is delivered. This is not merely a difference in how emphatic the speaker sounds: the assertion following the reply can have opposite polarity.

The Welsh answer can change grammatical person

The Foundation guide illustrates how a question addressed to ti can receive a first-person answer, and how a question about the speaker can receive a second-person answer. A translation must recover the respondent’s standpoint rather than repeat the person of the question mechanically.

An original Welsh discussion about who will pay can therefore contain a very short answer whose reference becomes clear only through the exchange. In Slovenian, preserve whether the respondent confirms their own responsibility or addresses the other person’s responsibility. Beginning a reply with an independent no does not itself determine who the following verb concerns.

This matters especially when the next clause explains the correction. A response can reject the questioner’s assumption while affirming an alternative arrangement. Treating every negative-looking reply as negating the following explanation can remove that distinction. Establish the scope of the rejection: the preceding proposal, the next predicate, or a particular participant’s role.

Agreement must also preserve an actual pair

The Slovenian overview describes singular, dual, and plural number in nouns and verbs. Canolfan Peniarth, meanwhile, explains that Welsh chi can address either several people or one person formally. A plural-looking Welsh address is therefore insufficient evidence of a real pair in the Slovenian translation.

For an original Welsh correction to two colleagues, the respondent may deny that those two made a mistake while explaining that a larger group misunderstood the arrangement. The target needs to keep the pair distinct from that group. Correct negative scope would not compensate for assigning the error to the wrong set of people.

Conversely, a respectful Welsh question to one visitor must not invent a second visitor just because chi appears. Interpret the real addressees through the source exchange, then read Slovenian number agreement together with the placement of ne and the respondent’s personal standpoint. Those grammatical choices cooperate to determine exactly who is being corrected and what the correction says.
