Welsh to Setswana: distinguish a reported fact from a desired result

A following clause can report something or ask for it to happen

A Welsh message can say that somebody was present, express a wish for assistance or explain why assistance is being given. All three can introduce another clause, but they make different claims. Before choosing a Setswana linking construction, determine whether the source reports an event, requests an action or describes a purpose.

The Welsh Foundation grammar guide illustrates bod after meddwl when expressing what somebody thinks, including present and imperfect contexts. That construction reports the content of a thought. It does not, by itself, turn the thought into a request that the described situation should be brought about.

This matters when translating a Welsh workplace note. A writer saying that a colleague was available yesterday is supplying information. A writer saying that they want the colleague to help tomorrow is expressing a desired action. The target should not accidentally make either sentence perform the other’s job.

Gore occurs in constructions with different functions

The Peace Corps Setswana grammar presents Ke batla gore o nthuse as an expression of wanting assistance. It separately gives Mmolelela gore ke ne ke le fa for asking somebody to tell another person that the speaker was there. The embedded content concerns a desired action in the first example and an earlier presence in the second.

The same teaching material discusses gore in a purpose construction about helping somebody finish quickly. Recognising the linker is therefore only the beginning of interpreting the clause. Read the main verb and the relationship between the events before deciding whether the following material is factual content or an intended outcome.

These examples are useful without treating one simplified grammatical instruction as a universal account of every gore clause. Preserve the documented distinctions and check the actual target verb forms in context rather than attaching a memorised ending after every occurrence.

Check what the translated message commits its writer to

Imagine a Welsh coordinator recording that a technician attended a rehearsal. Later in the same note, the coordinator asks for help completing a setup before the next performance. The first statement records attendance; the second does not prove that help has already been provided. Keep that difference visible in the translation.

If the note explains that assistance is intended to speed up the setup, preserve the intention without declaring success. Helping someone so that they finish sooner does not establish that the task was completed. A target revision that turns the purpose into a completed result adds an unsupported event.

Also identify whose presence or assistance the embedded clause describes. In a relayed message, the person delivering the information may differ from the person who was present. Repeating a first-person expression without checking the reported speaker can attribute the visit to the messenger.

Read the final note as a small record of commitments: what the writer knows, what the writer wants and what outcome the writer hopes to achieve. Those distinctions give a practical way to review the Welsh-to-Setswana translation even when the clause structures differ. A smooth link between sentences should preserve each statement’s status, rather than quietly convert a request or intention into evidence that something happened.
