Welsh to Klingon: a conditional is more than a future-looking verb

The condition must remain a condition

The Welsh Foundation guide distinguishes conditional forms such as Baswn i’n talu, I would pay, from future constructions. A statement about what a person would do should not automatically become an unconditional promise about what they will do.

The Klingon Language Institute teaches -chugh as a verbal suffix expressing if. Its pair bIyIt and bIyItchugh distinguishes you walk from if you walk. The target condition can therefore be attached to the verb rather than expressed through a separate word that resembles an English if.

For an original Welsh arrangement, compare a speaker agreeing to pay if another person attends with a speaker simply announcing that they will pay. The condition determines when the commitment applies. A translation preserving only the paying-related vocabulary would lose that restriction. The Welsh conditional form helps establish the hypothetical setting, while the complete source sentence identifies which event supplies the condition.

Clause order does not by itself identify the result

KLI explains that a Klingon if-clause may precede or follow the result clause. Its teaching exercises may require matching the presented order, but its explanation distinguishes that exercise policy from ordinary translation. The position of a clause can affect presentation without changing which verb carries the conditional suffix.

A Welsh writer can lead with the proposed action and give the condition afterwards. The Klingon result should still make the source’s condition apply to that action. Conversely, moving the conditional suffix onto the result predicate would exchange the two relationships even if the clauses retained the Welsh order.

For an original Welsh invitation, distinguish coming if transport is available from arranging transport if someone comes. Both mention arrival and transport, but one makes transport the prerequisite and the other makes arrival the prerequisite. Identify which source event restricts the other before interpreting the target suffix. A fluent-looking sequence of the same main nouns is insufficient when the dependency has been reversed.

A request inside the result remains a request

The KLI lesson illustrates a condition paired with an instruction: bIDoy’chugh yIQong, if you are tired, sleep. The conditional clause does not convert the instruction into a report that sleeping has already occurred.

The Welsh Foundation guide’s concise future and conditional paradigms likewise distinguish statements from questions through their constructions. A Welsh request about a hypothetical payment must retain its request function; a conditional-looking verb alone does not settle whether the writer asks, promises, or directs.

In an original Welsh exchange, compare requesting an action if a condition holds with predicting that action under the same condition. The listener’s expected response differs. A Klingon translation must preserve both the if relationship and the communicative purpose of the result clause. Read the target suffix and the complete result predicate together, allowing its Latin transcription and attached morphology to differ from the Welsh word boundaries while retaining the same restricted proposal.
