Welsh to Kinyarwanda: class agreement and a clock reading that needs interpretation

The number on the clock is not always the spoken hour label

A Welsh meeting message can specify a clock time directly, but Kinyarwanda time expressions need their convention understood before a number is translated literally. The Peace Corps course’s local clock table associates saa mbiri with 8:00 or 20:00, and distinguishes day from night through additional wording. The numeral in the expression is therefore not simply the hour displayed on a Welsh twelve-hour clock.

This makes the intended appointment time the starting point. Preserve whether the Welsh writer means morning or evening and which clock reading is intended, then interpret the Kinyarwanda expression accordingly. A mechanically preserved numeral could point to another time even though both sides contain a recognizable number.

The course presents this as a day-and-night twelve-hour system. It does not justify replacing every digital timestamp in a technical interface with a local spoken expression. A translated sentence explaining when to arrive and a copied numeric time field have different presentation needs; the same real appointment must remain identifiable in both.

Welsh mutation and Kinyarwanda noun class change different information

Welsh fy nhad and dy dad retain the father noun while changing the owner and the mutation it triggers. Kinyarwanda initial material can instead identify the noun’s class and number. Ngabonziza’s linguistic discussion gives igiti and ibiti for tree and trees. The changed beginning cannot be explained by applying a Welsh possessive-mutation rule.

His account also gives agacupa and uducupa for small bottle and small bottles, showing a different class pair. These examples demonstrate why replacing every plural noun prefix with one universal target prefix would fail. The selected noun and its class behavior matter, while the Welsh source supplies the intended quantity and description.

The same discussion describes agreement between nouns and related modifiers, including numerals. A Welsh counted phrase should consequently be translated as a complete target noun phrase. The Welsh numeral’s masculine or feminine form is not a ready-made Kinyarwanda agreement prefix, even though both languages visibly modify material around the counted noun.

A negative future is a whole verb form

The Peace Corps future table contrasts Nzajya with Sinzajya, will go and will not go for the speaker. It also gives different negative patterns for other persons. A Welsh negative statement cannot therefore be translated by inserting one isolated equivalent of ddim while leaving the rest of the Kinyarwanda verb unexamined.

The Learn Welsh Foundation guide itself shows future forms and initial changes in negative environments, so Welsh readers already have reason to recognize grammar in a changed word beginning. The target change, however, belongs to its own person-and-tense pattern. Preserve who will act, whether the action is denied and the intended future reference together.

These comparisons concern Kinyarwanda specifically. A related Rundi expression should not be substituted solely because its prefix looks similar. The attested target construction, rather than family resemblance or a Welsh spelling analogy, supplies the relevant form.
