Welsh to Italian: distinguish the writer from the person a message concerns
Identify the relationship before choosing a relative form
A Welsh introduction can identify somebody through an activity: the person who writes books, for example. The Foundation grammar guide demonstrates sy joining this kind of description to a person already mentioned. The named person is the writer inside that description, even if the larger sentence says that someone else knows her.
That relationship changes when a description identifies the recipient of a letter or its subject matter. A person who writes, a person somebody writes to and a person somebody writes about need not be the same individual. Translating all three through one familiar relative expression can wrongly assign authorship or turn a contact into a topic.
When checking a Welsh paragraph about a publication, separate those roles first. Find who produced the text, who received it and who appears in its contents. This is especially useful where the paragraph introduces several people before describing the correspondence between them.
Italian cui usually preserves an indirect relationship
The Accademia della Crusca explains that cui is invariant across gender and number and normally accompanies a preposition for indirect complements. It contrasts this use with che. Consequently, seeing cui remain unchanged beside a feminine or plural antecedent is not, by itself, evidence of a missing agreement ending.
Its example le due ragazze (a) cui Marta alludeva identifies the people Marta referred to. The girls are not doing the referring. The consultation also explains that a may be omitted in the relevant dative use. That restricted option does not license removing every preposition before cui.
A different pattern places cui between an article and a noun to express a possessive relationship. The consultation illustrates le cui azioni. This introduces somebody’s actions; it is not simply a longer spelling of the relative expression used for somebody performing an action. Read the following noun before deciding what the construction contributes.
Use correspondence details to test the translation
Imagine an exhibition note that credits a Welsh writer, mentions the curator she contacted and describes the artist discussed in her letter. The Italian version must let a visitor reconstruct those three connections. A polished sentence that exchanges the curator and artist would give readers the wrong account of the correspondence.
Check the main clause and the descriptive clause separately. Someone may be the recipient in the main event but the author in a later description. Preserve the role within each clause rather than assigning a single grammatical function to that person throughout the paragraph.
Then inspect prepositional phrases as whole expressions. The Welsh Foundation guide distinguishes writing to somebody from speaking about somebody and explicitly warns that a preposition does not retain one English meaning in every construction. An English gloss can help explain a relationship, but it cannot select the Italian construction on its own.
If the original alternates between a person and that person’s work, keep the reference explicit during revision. The writer’s actions, the work someone discusses and the person someone addresses require different links. Resolve an unclear reference in the source before compressing the introduction into an elegant sentence that confidently names the wrong participant.
