Welsh to Inuktitut in Latin script: keep track of who acts during a “while” clause

Two events can overlap without sharing a participant

A Welsh account of a busy afternoon might say that someone worked while another person travelled. It could also describe one person doing two things together. Those are different arrangements, although both can be explained in English with while. Before translating, identify the participant in each event rather than assuming that simultaneity makes the actors identical.

Geiriadur yr Academi’s morphology guide identifies tra as a conjunction meaning while and distinguishes it from another use meaning very. It notes particular mutation possibilities with forms of bod. An initial change in a Welsh verb is therefore not a dependable shortcut for deciding whether two clauses describe the same person.

For a Latin-script Inuktitut translation, the relationship between those participants can affect the ending used to connect the events. Establish that relationship from the Welsh account, including any earlier sentence that explains a pronoun’s reference.

Tusaalanga distinguishes same-actor and different-actor patterns

Pirurvik’s lesson on simultaneous actions presents endings used when both actions belong to the same person. Its examples include nirilunga for while I was eating and uqalimaaqtuni in a sentence about somebody falling asleep while reading. The spelling of the connecting element depends partly on the preceding stem.

The lesson then presents a different pattern for events performed by different people. Its example Niritillugu miqsulauqtuq describes one person eating while another sews. Selecting the same-actor pattern would change that allocation, rather than simply give a shorter version of the same account.

These are South Qikiqtaaluk teaching examples. The lesson’s Roman spelling illustrates the construction used here; it should not be presented as an identical paradigm for every Inuktut variety. Nor should an isolated list of endings replace checking the full verbs in an actual translation.

Separate overlap, sequence and responsibility in a practical account

Consider a Welsh diary describing preparations for a performance. A musician practises while a volunteer arranges chairs. Later the volunteer listens while checking the running order. The first description has two actors; the second can have one. The target should preserve that switch even if both Welsh sentences use similar linking language.

Write out the actor for each action while reviewing the translation. This temporary expansion is particularly helpful where the diary repeatedly uses she or he. Two occurrences of the same Welsh pronoun do not prove that one person performs both events; the surrounding passage may have introduced another participant.

Also decide whether the events actually overlap. Carrying equipment and then checking a list describes a sequence, whereas checking the list during the carrying describes overlap. A connecting ending chosen for simultaneous actions should not turn a chronological account into a claim that both tasks happened together.

If a later revision changes who did the second task, revisit the connection between the clauses. Replacing a name alone may leave the target’s grammatical relationship unchanged. That can inadvertently credit the musician with arranging the room or make the volunteer responsible for playing. Read the completed account as an allocation of activities, then compare that allocation with the Welsh source.
