Welsh to Icelandic: keep a short reply attached to the verb it answers

A brief answer still carries grammatical information

A Welsh conversation about an outing may end with a very short answer. The National Centre for Learning Welsh’s Foundation guide presents answers that repeat an appropriate verb form, including conditional replies. The answer also has to identify the right person: a question addressed to you can receive an answer about me. Treating every affirmative response as an interchangeable standalone yes loses that relationship.

For Icelandic, even a reply meaning me too can depend on the verb in the preceding sentence. Wood, Barros and Sigurðsson investigate this connection through short answers and omitted material. Their examples show why translating the question and response in isolation can produce forms that look plausible separately but do not belong together.

Keep the invitation and its answer in the same translation passage. If only the reply is available, include the preceding question as context when checking it. A screenshot containing a single affirmative fragment may conceal the very construction that determines its form.

Two expressions of wanting do not license identical replies

The researchers contrast Icelandic langa and vilja. Their examples include Mig langar að fara and Ég vil fara, both expressing a wish to go. The person experiencing the wish has a different case in these constructions. That grammatical difference survives when much of the reply remains unspoken.

With vilja, the study gives Ég líka as the corresponding short response. Its langa discussion includes accusative and dative variation, including Mér líka. This documents a particular pattern of variation; it does not mean that any pronoun case can follow any expression of wanting. Nor should the dative variant be presented as the single standard answer for every speaker.

For an outing coordinator, the practical question is whether the translated acceptance fits the invitation actually sent. Choosing one construction for the invitation and borrowing a reply from another can break that fit, even when their English glosses sound equivalent.

Read an exchange as an exchange, rather than separate phrase cards

Suppose a Welsh organiser asks who would like to join a walk. One participant answers for herself; another forwards the conversation and adds that a colleague also wants to come. These messages contain different speakers and references. Preserve those distinctions instead of recycling the first acceptance wherever another person expresses interest.

First establish what each reply accepts: joining the walk, being able to attend, or undertaking to organise it. Welsh preference, ability and obligation forms in the Foundation guide distinguish these intentions. A fluent Icelandic answer to the wrong underlying question can still misrepresent the participant’s commitment.

Then review each short answer alongside its own preceding clause. Rewriting the opening invitation during editing can create a fresh mismatch if the answers remain untouched. A fragment copied from an earlier version should therefore be checked again against the revised wording.

When the conversation must be understandable without its history, a complete statement may communicate the intention more clearly than an unexplained fragment. That is an editorial decision about the message’s use, rather than a claim that short Icelandic replies are defective. In a visible exchange, their grammatical connection is part of what makes them concise.
