Tibetan to Yucatec Maya: introductions, courtesy and meaningful vowel marks

A name introduction does not need a matching Tibetan auxiliary

A Tibetan introduction can identify the speaker through a personal name followed by the egophoric copula yin. INALI’s Yucatec Maya courtesy collection instead gives In k’aaba’e’... for introducing one’s name. These are two ways to perform the introduction, rather than a word-by-word alignment between Tibetan identity marking and a Maya final particle. Put the person’s actual name into the target introduction; do not translate the name as ordinary descriptive vocabulary.

The Tibetan auxiliary also carries a relationship between the speaker and the information. Nicolas Tournadre’s account explains that egophoric marking concerns involvement or knowledge and can occur beyond first-person subjects. That is why finding yin in the source does not by itself license inserting a Maya expression meaning my name. Establish whether the Tibetan sentence introduces the speaker, identifies another person, or claims ownership before choosing the target wording.

Courtesy should keep the particular action being acknowledged

INALI lists Yuum bo’otik as an expression of thanks and gives a longer expression specifically thanking someone for a visit. A Tibetan thank-you following a visit should preserve that reason when it matters to the exchange. Conversely, a short acknowledgment of help does not automatically need to acquire a reference to visiting. The target formula’s conversational purpose is more useful than an imagined literal correspondence between its individual words and Tibetan politeness vocabulary.

The same collection distinguishes inviting someone inside from asking permission to pass. A Tibetan utterance containing respectful language can perform either action, so respectful tone alone will not select the Maya expression. Determine which participant is moving: the visitor being welcomed in, or the speaker asking to get past. That difference belongs to the meaning of the request and can be lost even when a target phrase is perfectly polite.

Apostrophes and accents can distinguish the thing being named

Tibetan writing organizes syllables with tsheg separators and letter stacks. Yucatec Maya’s Latin spelling uses a different set of distinctions: INALI’s writing norms identify plain and glottalized consonants, vowel length, and marked vowel patterns. A Maya apostrophe inside a word therefore cannot be handled as if it were an optional English quotation mark. Removing it while cleaning up a translation can change the written representation of the word itself.

For a concrete vocabulary check, the norms give ja’ for water. They also distinguish miis, cat, from míis, broom. A Tibetan source naming an animal and one naming a cleaning implement must lead to different target words even though these Maya spellings differ by only an accent. Tibetan letter complexity is not a reason to simplify the target into unaccented Latin text: the target has its own information-bearing marks.

This page’s target is Maayat’aan, Yucatec Maya, the language identified by INALI’s collection and spelling norms. Those resources are not interchangeable with material for every language in the Mayan family. A Tibetan reference to Maya people or writing may be broad, but the actual translation requested here needs vocabulary and conventions belonging to this particular target language.
