Tibetan to Mexican Spanish: future plans, personal experience and the people addressed

A future auxiliary can identify an intention, not just a date

Tournadre distinguishes the Tibetan future auxiliaries གི་ཡིན་ and གི་རེད་. In the described spoken construction, the former is intentional and egophoric, used with a first-person volitional event; the latter is assertive. A translation into Mexican Spanish should preserve whether the writer is announcing their own plan or stating something about another person’s forthcoming action.

Spanish offers both a simple future and ir a followed by an infinitive. The RAE notes the prominence of the latter in American Spanish, while the simple future remains useful in formal registers and other meanings. Neither Spanish construction should be selected solely by finding the word tomorrow in Tibetan: intention, prediction and the genre of the message contribute to the choice.

The RAE example Creo que esa película te va a gustar predicts someone’s reaction. It demonstrates why ir a cannot be treated as an automatic marker of the actor’s intention. In a Tibetan statement about personally making something tomorrow, recover the intending participant from the whole source construction; then choose a natural Mexican Spanish expression without assuming that one future form encodes exactly the same evidential distinction.

Egophoric involvement can belong to the recipient

Another Tibetan example describes someone sending the speaker a letter with an egophoric auxiliary. The sender is still the other person. Mexican Spanish distinguishes subject pronouns from direct and indirect object pronouns, as the Colegio de México dictionary illustrates through its pronoun classifications. The Tibetan auxiliary therefore cannot simply be translated by supplying yo as the sender.

For this type of correspondence, the Spanish recipient expression must remain attached to the person who received the letter. The source’s personal involvement may be clear from its auxiliary even if an English gloss makes that information look like an ordinary first-person clause. A Spanish account that preserves the recipient but invents an emphatic first-person subject would change both the event and the passage’s focus.

Plural address does not reproduce the Tibetan register hierarchy

Tibetan has ordinary and honorific forms for addressing a group. The Academia Mexicana de la Lengua discusses the American use of ustedes in place of vosotros and the loss of that particular plural opposition. A respectful Tibetan plural consequently should not be mechanically mapped to a contrast between Mexican ustedes and an imported vosotros.

The number of listeners must nevertheless remain accurate. Tibetan ཁྱེད་རང་གཉིས་ explicitly addresses two people, whereas a broader plural need not. Mexican Spanish ustedes identifies plural addressees but does not itself restrict them to two. Where the pair is significant, preserve that restriction through the surrounding expression rather than letting politeness obscure how many people received the invitation.

Respectful reference may still require a gender decision

Tibetan honorific ཁོང་ can mean he or she. Spanish él and ella distinguish those references. The Tibetan form’s respectful status does not resolve that choice, and an institution’s prestigious title is not evidence that the referent is male. Use the passage’s identification of the person when assigning Spanish singular reference; if that identification is absent, a suitable repeated name or role can avoid inventing it.
