Tibetan to European Portuguese: personal involvement, clitic placement and respectful address

A Tibetan personal auxiliary does not always become eu

Tibetan egophoric auxiliaries can express the speaker’s involvement through receiving something or owning it, rather than through performing an action. European Portuguese distinguishes these participant roles through its own clauses and pronouns. A Tibetan ending associated with the writer cannot simply be translated by inserting eu as the subject of every target sentence.

Tournadre’s example in which another person sends the speaker a letter is a useful test. The other person remains the sender, while the writer is the recipient. Portuguese may express that recipient through a clitic such as me, but its placement belongs to Portuguese syntax, not to the source auxiliary’s final position. Preserving the sender and recipient comes before deciding where the clitic goes.

Negation and emphasis can move the Portuguese pronoun

Carla Marques’s Ciberdúvidas answer contrasts O João disse-me a verdade with Talvez o João me diga a verdade. In the first example the pronoun follows the verb; in the second, the preceding talvez creates an environment for it to occur before the verb. The participant remains the same despite the changed placement.

This helps distinguish two decisions in Tibetan-to-Portuguese translation. First recover the person involved in the source event. Then place their target pronoun according to the Portuguese clause. A Tibetan statement presenting personal involvement and a Tibetan statement qualifying an event should not be forced into identical Portuguese clitic order merely because their participant nouns are similar.

The same answer identifies negation among the contexts conditioning placement before the verb. If a Tibetan denial is added to an affirmative message, the Portuguese version may therefore need a structural change around its pronoun as well as a negative word. Moving me does not change the recipient; it makes that recipient fit the revised target syntax.

Respectful Tibetan you needs Portuguese social choices, not a label swap

Tibetan respectful singular ཁྱེད་རང་ contrasts with familiar address. Practice Portuguese explains the European Portuguese distinction between familiar tu and formal constructions associated with third-person verb forms. Its examples Tu trabalhas muito and Você trabalha muito show that the verb changes as well as the explicit pronoun.

The same teaching resource cautions that overt você can sound too direct in Portugal, and describes alternatives including using the person’s name or an appropriate title. A Tibetan honorific therefore should not always be converted into the visibly explicit word você. A natural Portuguese respectful construction can preserve deference while leaving that pronoun unspoken.

This is especially important when the Tibetan text alternates between addressing a respected person and referring to them. Third-person-shaped Portuguese address still speaks to the listener. It must not be interpreted as proof that the source has shifted to talking about someone else. Identify the conversational role independently of the target verb’s grammatical person.

A respectful group can still be exactly two people

Tibetan ཁྱེད་རང་གཉིས་ explicitly addresses two people. Portuguese vocês identifies multiple addressees but does not by itself restrict them to a pair. Where a Tibetan invitation or shared obligation specifies two listeners, preserve that restriction through the full Portuguese expression.

Nor should singular respect be expanded into such a group. The Tibetan writer may use deferential language toward one recipient while reporting a letter received from another. European Portuguese must keep courtesy, participant role and actual number separate: a polite verb form cannot substitute for identifying who sent, who received and how many people are being addressed.
