Tibetan to Marathi: identify the possessed item before choosing the possessive form

Separate the owner from the thing being described

A Tibetan noun phrase may combine a name, a descriptive expression and a grammatical marker. Garrett and Hill’s Classical Tibetan corpus analysis treats modifiers as part of structured noun phrases and identifies case markers at their boundaries. Read that complete structure before deciding which participant owns an item or which description belongs to it.

In a passage about a teacher’s book and a visitor’s bag, establish the two ownership relationships separately. The person nearest to a noun on the screen is not automatically its owner. A line break in a scanned source is especially weak evidence for deciding which expression a modifier belongs to. Preserve the relationships before trying to make the Marathi sentence concise.

Marathi possessive agreement concerns the possessed entity

The Marathi Universal Dependencies overview describes the possessive forms चा, ची, चे and च्या as agreeing in gender and number with the possessed entity, independently of the possessor. Consequently, a changed possessive ending does not necessarily signal a change of owner. It may reflect a different noun being possessed.

This is useful when a Tibetan passage repeatedly mentions one person’s different belongings. A Marathi revision that changes the noun for an item may require a corresponding agreement change even though the person remains the same. Review the possessive together with its head noun; do not preserve an earlier ending simply because the Tibetan owner has not changed.

A small attested example shows the relevant relationship

The University of Chicago’s Marathi in Context introduces माझं नाव for my name and माझी आई for my mother. These short expressions demonstrate that the possessive form can vary while referring to the same speaker as owner or relation-holder. They are examples from the teaching material, not complete translations of an unspecified Tibetan sentence.

Use the distinction when a Tibetan introduction moves from someone’s name to their family. The target noun phrase must identify the intended family relationship as well as use the appropriate agreement. Correct possessive morphology cannot rescue a wrong kinship term, and a correct kinship term does not justify leaving an incompatible possessive form beside it.

Keep grammatical gender apart from personal identity

Marathi grammatical gender belongs to its nominal system. Do not interpret a possessive ending as independent evidence that the Tibetan owner is male or female. In a source with an unfamiliar personal name, establish the person’s identity from the passage rather than working backward from the gender of a Marathi word for a possession.

A useful review method is to list each owner and the item or relation associated with them, then compare that list with the finished Marathi paragraph. If a noun has been replaced during editing, inspect its local agreement again. If an owner has changed, inspect the reference through the surrounding sentences. These two edits can look similar on the surface but repair different problems: one concerns the target noun phrase, while the other changes who the source passage is about.
