Tibetan to Malayalam: an introduction needs distance, respect and group membership

A near respected person differs from a distant one

Moag’s Malayalam textbook distinguishes paired third-person forms according to relative distance from the speaker, alongside social-reference differences. Its respected masculine forms include അദ്ദേഹം for somebody farther away and ഇദ്ദേഹം for somebody near. A Tibetan introduction must preserve which person is being presented rather than choose a respectful form without considering its reference.

Garrett and Hill identify Tibetan demonstratives ḥdi, this, and de, that, in their written-corpus study. These source distinctions provide evidence for the contrast to preserve. In a passage introducing one person beside the speaker and discussing another elsewhere, Malayalam distance choices should keep those people apart even if both deserve respect.

The listener can be inside or outside the group introduced

Moag distinguishes ഞങ്ങൾ as exclusive we from നമ്മൾ as inclusive we. A Tibetan speaker introducing a group needs the Malayalam form that reflects whether the listener belongs to it. Merely establishing that the speaker is one participant does not settle that additional relationship.

If the Tibetan introduction presents the speaker’s organisation to an outside visitor, the visitor may be excluded from the group reference. If it addresses fellow members about a shared activity, the listener may belong to the group. The same organisation and the same speaker can consequently require different target reference depending on who receives the introduction.

Polite address can still be singular

Moag’s pronoun reference list gives നിങ്ങൾ as polite singular as well as a plural address form. A Tibetan message addressed politely to one guest should therefore not be interpreted as addressing several guests solely because the Malayalam form has a plural use. Preserve the real number independently from the social relationship.

This matters when an introduction first welcomes one visitor and then mentions a larger audience. The target reference to the visitor must not absorb the audience into the addressee group, and the later audience reference must not become a singular respectful guest. Following each source referent separately prevents a polite translation from changing who is actually present.

The speaker’s knowledge is not the person’s social rank

Zeisler’s Standard Spoken Tibetan discussion links epistemic choices with personal authority, involvement and perception. These contrasts should not be translated as if they directly determine which Malayalam third-person social form applies. A speaker can closely know an equal, observe a respected person or report information about a stranger.

The Malayalam introduction needs both dimensions preserved where the source makes them relevant: how the person is referred to socially and how the speaker presents the information. A Tibetan narrator’s confidence about somebody’s identity does not make that person physically near, socially familiar or part of the listener’s group. Resolve those relationships independently so that the target introduction presents the same people, with the same group membership and the intended interpersonal stance.
