Tibetan to Luxembourgish: a recipient and a location can both need the dative

Do not translate a Tibetan relational particle as one fixed word

Jäschke’s historical Tibetan grammar describes ལ་ with a broad range of relations including to, at, and onto. A visible particle therefore does not establish one narrow English-style preposition. Its interpretation depends on the noun phrase and predicate in the source construction.

Grammaire.lu illustrates a Luxembourgish recipient with Ech ginn dem Robert e Buch, I give Robert a book. It also presents dative forms in descriptions of position. The target dative is consequently not a label reserved exclusively for people receiving things, and the Tibetan particle cannot be matched to it without analyzing the actual relation.

The source noun’s role and the target noun’s gender are separate

The Luxembourgish teaching table distinguishes dative dem for masculine and neuter singular nouns from der for feminine singular nouns. Its position examples contrast a location under a table with one under a board. Selecting the article depends on the chosen target noun as well as the required construction.

Jäschke’s description of Tibetan particles does not provide a corresponding masculine-versus-feminine article choice. A translator must therefore establish where something is located or to whom something is given, then select the Luxembourgish noun phrase’s own form. An identical Tibetan relational ending can yield different target articles without changing the underlying spatial relationship.

A first-person word may name the actor or the recipient

Grammaire.lu lists mir as both a first-person plural nominative and a first-person singular dative. Thus a target reference can mean a group acting or an individual receiving, depending on the clause. Isolated recognition of mir cannot confirm that the Tibetan participant roles have survived translation.

This matters where Tibetan leaves a third-person subject unexpressed, a possibility Jäschke notes in his historical material. A phrase meaning to me must not be promoted to we merely because it stands prominently in the target sentence. Recover the source giver separately from the recipient before interpreting the Luxembourgish pronoun’s number and case.

A transfer and a position require different event readings

In a Tibetan instruction, a noun marked relationally may identify the endpoint of a transfer, an intended beneficiary, or the place where an item is found. These readings can share short grammatical material while describing different situations. The Luxembourgish giving example demonstrates why naming Robert is insufficient: Robert must retain his role as recipient.

Likewise, a source statement locating a book near someone does not by itself say that the book belongs to them or is being given to them. Rebuilding the target case phrase should preserve that distinction. In this direction, the useful chain of decisions runs from the Tibetan predicate and relational meaning to the Luxembourgish construction and then to its article or pronoun. Correctly spelled dem, der, or mir cannot compensate for turning a location into a recipient or an individual recipient into a group of actors.
