Tibetan to Northern Kurdish: a book can be general, identified or indefinite

A bare target noun does not have only one interpretation

Thackston’s Kurmanji grammar explains that an absolute noun can have generic or definite meaning depending on its context. Its example kitêb can refer to books generally or to an already identified book. A Tibetan source reference should therefore not be translated by assuming that a bare target noun always introduces one unspecified item.

Garrett and Hill’s written Tibetan analysis identifies indefinite material such as cig and its variants separately from demonstratives and plural markers. Those source distinctions help determine whether the passage introduces an item, refers back to it or describes a class. Preserve that reference function when choosing the Kurmanji noun construction.

An indefinite object can need an oblique form

Thackston contrasts kitêbek in a sentence introducing a book with kitêbekê in an illustrated object construction. A Tibetan source indefinite marker cannot consequently be represented by attaching one invariant target ending in every sentence. The Kurmanji noun’s role affects its form.

Imagine a Tibetan passage that first reports the presence of a book and then states that somebody sees it. The target needs to preserve both the reference relationship and the changed sentence role. A form appropriate when introducing an indefinite entity is not automatically the correct form for every following mention as an affected or perceived participant.

Gender belongs to the target noun paradigm

The Kurmanji grammar identifies kitêb as feminine and distinguishes masculine and feminine oblique indefinite endings. The Tibetan source phrase must therefore be interpreted for its role and reference while the target noun supplies its own grammatical gender. An inanimate item should not be assumed to lack relevant target gender simply because it is not a person.

The grammar’s masculine contrast mirovek and mirovekî illustrates the corresponding difference with a man. A Tibetan translator cannot use the book pattern as a universal recipe for every indefinite noun. Establish the target noun class and the construction independently instead of assigning all source indefinite phrases the same visible form.

A title can look like a description but have a lexical meaning

Garrett and Hill distinguish Tibetan blon-chen, prime minister, from blon-po chen-po, great minister. When the person identified by such a phrase possesses or encounters the book, that source identification must be translated correctly before the Kurmanji noun relations are built.

A Tibetan passage may first identify an officeholder, then mention an indefinite object and later return to that object as known. The Kurmanji version should retain all three developments: the person’s actual role, the introduction of the item and its subsequent established reference. A mechanically repeated dictionary noun can conceal changes in definiteness or case, while a mistranslated title can change who the entire episode concerns. Resolve the source noun phrases before choosing the target forms that connect them.
