Tibetan to Hebrew: personal knowledge and present agreement are different choices

A speaker-centered form does not identify a Hebrew gender

Garfield and de Villiers examine Tibetan evidential distinctions involving the speaker’s personal knowledge, direct perception, and inference. A statement grounded in personal experience is not thereby marked as masculine or feminine. When Hebrew requires gender agreement, that information must come from the participant being described rather than from the Tibetan speaker’s relationship to the evidence.

Ritter’s study of Hebrew present-tense predicates identifies agreement in gender and number rather than person. Thus אני כותב and אני כותבת distinguish masculine and feminine singular speakers saying that they write or are writing. The first-person pronoun remains the same. Selecting the Hebrew predicate requires identifying its subject, even when Tibetan has already made the speaker’s epistemic involvement clear.

Possession can supply personal access without supplying the action’s subject

Jäschke’s historical grammar gives ངའི་ as my and ཁྱོད་ཀྱི་ as your. In the written conventions he describes, a genitive precedes the noun it determines. Such an owner expression belongs inside a noun phrase; it should not be mistaken for the subject merely because it names the speaker.

This distinction becomes consequential when a Hebrew present predicate describes the owned item or another participant. The target agreement follows that grammatical subject, not automatically the owner or narrator. A Tibetan message about my daughter’s activity must preserve both relationships: who is related to the speaker and who performs the action. First-person ownership cannot justify a first-person interpretation of the whole clause.

A knowledge distinction does not disappear when the agreement is correct

In Garfield and de Villiers’s analysis, indirect evidence includes general inference and inference from a specific perceptible clue. These can support equally definite assertions. Translating either kind by a feminine or masculine Hebrew present form addresses agreement, but does not itself preserve the difference between observing an event and reconstructing it from evidence.

For a Tibetan statement whose evidential basis matters, Hebrew may need additional wording to express that basis. An inference should not automatically become a hesitant guess, and personal access should not automatically become an explicit claim of eyewitness observation. The source account distinguishes kinds of knowledge rather than providing a scale from grammatically correct to doubtful.

Writing without points does not remove grammatical distinctions

The Hebrew Academy distinguishes standard vocalized and unvocalized spelling; ordinary contemporary prose generally uses the latter. A Tibetan-script input therefore need not yield Hebrew with vowel points to be fully written. The contrast between כותב and כותבת remains visible in letters and is not an optional decoration supplied by pointing.

The Academy also explains that unvocalized spelling uses vowel-indicating ו and י under its own rules. It is not always obtained by stripping points from a vocalized dictionary form. For this language direction, preserving Tibetan participant reference determines Hebrew agreement, preserving epistemic meaning determines any additional explanation, and choosing standard unvocalized spelling determines the written presentation. These decisions interact in one sentence but cannot substitute for one another.
