Recovering people and time from a Swahili message

A gender-neutral reference needs an English decision

“Yeye ana rula” can mean “He has a ruler” or “She has a ruler”. Swahili yeye and the human third-person subject marker do not by themselves distinguish male from female. An English translation needs the actual person’s context before choosing he or she.

Use an established pronoun, a name, or English singular “they” where appropriate when the person’s gender is unknown. Do not infer it from the item possessed or the person’s occupation. If several people occur in the message, resolving the reference matters more than choosing the most fluent-looking English pronoun at first glance.

Possessive agreement does not reveal the owner’s gender

Swahili possessive forms agree with the class of the possessed noun. The form around a book can differ from the form around a house even when the same person owns both. English may use one unchanged possessive adjective across those phrases. Do not interpret a change in Swahili agreement as evidence that ownership has switched to another person.

For a message about returning belongings, trace each possessive phrase to its intended owner. English “his” and “her” require a contextual distinction that the Swahili possessive stem may not supply. A repeated name can be clearer than a confident but unsupported gender choice, especially when an isolated sentence has been removed from its earlier conversation.

A compact verb may already state a completed event

“Nimepata nyumba” means “I have found a house”. The English “have” here is part of the perfect construction, not a separate statement that the speaker owns a house. The Swahili result describes finding one. In a housing update, confusing those meanings could change whether someone is still searching or merely reporting possession.

Read tense and aspect within the verb rather than translating only the familiar stem. Keep the rest of the message too: a found place, a booked place, and a place bought are distinct outcomes. Natural English should communicate the event actually expressed without supplying a stronger claim about ownership or a completed agreement.

Translate an hour with its period and convention

“Saa moja usiku” corresponds to “7 p.m.” under traditional Swahili hour counting. Rendering it as “one at night” would point an English reader to the wrong hour. Retain the period word as well as the numeral when checking an appointment.

The surrounding message may instead use international numeric notation, so first identify which convention is intended. A timetable, booking confirmation, and spoken arrangement need not present time the same way. If the convention remains unclear, confirm it rather than treating every Swahili number as requiring an automatic adjustment. Once established, express the appointment unambiguously in English, with the date and timezone if those are part of the source. The objective is the same real event, not matching the numeral visible in the original expression.
