Spanish to Arabic: expressing a pair through the formal dual

Spanish plural does not always mean an Arabic plural form

Spanish normally uses plural agreement when two distinct people or things are coordinated. The RAE describes this pattern for nouns, adjectives and verbs. Formal Arabic distinguishes a grammatical dual for two, alongside singular and plural. A Spanish phrase containing dos plus a plural noun can therefore require a target dual construction rather than an ordinary plural simply because the source noun is plural.

Madinah Arabic illustrates طَالِبَانِ for two male students and طَالِبَتَانِ for two female students in its nominative examples. The pair is expressed through the noun form. These examples concern the formal grammar taught in the lesson; everyday Arabic varieties do not all realize the full system in the same way.

Number and grammatical role are independent decisions

The lesson uses different dual endings for nominative and accusative or genitive positions. Its مَعَ مُدَرِّسَيْنِ means with two teachers. The same quantity of two can therefore occur with a different visible ending when the phrase’s role changes. A translation should not freeze the first dual spelling encountered and reuse it in every position.

This is useful when a Spanish message first introduces two teachers and later describes somebody meeting with them. The number of teachers stays constant while the grammatical construction changes. A different Arabic ending need not mean a different pair, and preserving the identical source noun shape is not a guarantee of preserving correct target grammar.

Two nouns can identify two people or one person with two roles

The RAE distinguishes coordinated singular nouns referring to separate entities from two descriptions referring to the same entity. A Spanish phrase naming a singer and an actress can describe one person who has both roles when the surrounding construction establishes that reading. It should not automatically become an Arabic dual merely because two occupation words occur.

Conversely, a message explicitly identifying two separate people should not be reduced to one because the occupations are closely related. Count the referents, not the nouns. The Arabic dual is useful only when the source actually establishes a pair; a list of two labels is insufficient on its own.

Gender does not follow from the numeral alone

Spanish dos does not itself distinguish masculine from feminine. The noun and surrounding reference identify the people or things. Arabic dual formation also depends on the target noun, including the feminine change illustrated in the student example. Recognizing the amount therefore does not remove the need to choose the appropriate lexical noun and form.

In a Spanish school message, two students may be explicitly identified as girls, boys or a pair whose composition is established elsewhere. Preserve that information without inventing additional people to satisfy a grammatical pattern. The practical analysis has three parts: determine whether there are exactly two referents, identify what they are and establish their role in the sentence. Formal Arabic can package those facts in a dual noun, while Spanish often distributes them across a numeral, plural noun and agreement.
