Sinhala to English: interpret the register before the pronoun
Written and conversational Sinhala do not use every form alike
Sinhala has distinct literary written and everyday spoken varieties, and many real messages draw on more than one level. Identify the source setting before deciding that an unfamiliar expression is an error. A public statement and a personal chat may communicate similar information through different grammatical forms.
English should preserve what the text does rather than imitate every source feature through an invented English dialect. A conversational Sinhala message can become straightforward, friendly English. A formal notice can remain concise and professional without reproducing its structure word for word. First establish the meaning and relationship, then choose a coherent English voice.
A conversational pronoun may not settle gender
එයා can refer to either “he” or “she” in conversational usage. Look back to a name or established person before choosing an English gendered pronoun. Formal written ඔහු and ඇය distinguish masculine and feminine reference, so recognise which system the source is using instead of treating every pronoun as equivalent.
If the message genuinely leaves a person’s identity uncertain, use a suitable neutral construction or repeat a known name. Do not guess from an occupation. A fluent English sentence is still inaccurate if it assigns the action to the wrong participant. This risk increases in forwarded conversations where the reader cannot see the original social setting.
Use relationships in the clause, not English word order
Sinhala can express grammatical roles through forms and constructions that do not match English word order. Identify the actor, affected person or item, and the action before rearranging a sentence. A noun at the beginning is not by itself proof that it performs the action.
Case marking and the wider construction can help distinguish a person doing something from someone experiencing a state. Translating each visible word independently can produce a smooth sentence with the wrong relationship. For a report about receiving, sending, or needing a document, check those roles explicitly before polishing the English wording.
Recognise the script before interpreting an unfamiliar word
වතුර ordinarily means “water.” It should be translated for its meaning, while a personal name may need an established English spelling or a careful transliteration. The different treatment is intentional: a common noun and an identifier perform different jobs in the message.
Keep Sinhala vowel signs and consonant combinations intact when examining the source. A rendering problem or an unfamiliar joined shape is not a reason to discard a character. Check names against existing records where possible, then compare dates, quantities, and reference codes separately from the prose. These details allow the English reader to find the same booking, person, or payment even when the sentence has been substantially reordered.
